Counting Down!

Just seven days until The Raven's Revenge is published!!

That's a mere WEEK.

One-hundred and sixty-eight hours (of which I will be sleeping a minimum of fifty-six).

Ten-thousand and eighty minutes tick tick ticking away.

Six-hundred and four thousand, eight hundred quickly moving seconds.

Not much time at all after all the work and the waiting.

Sounds like I'm going to have a baby doesn't it? Well, that's very much like what it feels like when the first book is published.

Here's a teaser from the opening of the book . . .

Dorsetshire, England
Autumn, 1663

Nicholas Edward Henry Philip Montford, Seventh Earl of Ashton, struggled through the dense foliage, clutching his shirtsleeve to staunch the blood streaming down his arm. His head throbbed. He'd looked back but a moment to see if he'd lost his pursuers and suffered a mighty whack from a low hanging branch as a result. That was when he'd parted company with his horse, an indifferent beast, rented from the inn, with no sense of loyalty to a somewhat incapacitated rider.

Now the pain, as relentless as a blacksmith's hammer, helped keep away the fatigue. But not for much longer. He could feel his life force drain away with each heartbeat.

Without warning his boot slipped on the bracken. He went down, bracing himself against the fall with both hands. Pure agony shot through his wounded arm. His head felt like it split in two. He groaned a deep feral sound, more animal than man.

Rolling onto his back, eyes clenched against the pain stabbing at his temples, Nicholas took a great breath of the cold night air. The ripe smell of decaying leaves filled his lungs. He opened his eyes to see the full globe of the moon shining down through the branches. The stars twinkled like old friends happy to see him after a long absence.

Sudden crashing in the underbrush alerted him to danger. Snorts and grunts announced a new enemy. Nicholas raised his aching head. From across the clearing, the eyes of a wild boar gleamed in the moonlight.

He repressed a harsh chuckle. What irony it would be to come to his end gored on the tusks of a swine.

But he had not survived the seamy streets of Amsterdam, the slave markets in Algiers, and endless days and nights floating adrift on the stormy Mediterranean to die here. It was not his time. At least he hoped not. He had yet to honor the promise he'd made to his father.

Nicholas rose awkwardly and readjusted his cloak. He pulled the flintlock pistol from his waistband. The weapon felt smooth and cold in his hand.

They faced each other, man and beast, quiet and still in the moonlight. The creature looked away. For a moment Nicholas thought it might leave, but then it turned toward him and charged.

Swearing and praying at the same time, Nicholas pulled the gun's hammer from half to full cock. He aimed between the glittering eyes, adjusted to compensate for the gun's tendency to shoot right, and squeezed hard on the trigger.

The pistol's recoil threw him back. He struggled to remain standing. Sparks flashed brilliantly. Then all went black. Pain throbbed through his head, echoing in his wounded arm. The loud explosion sealed his ears against sound. The foul stench of the powder invaded his nose and mouth, making it hard to breathe. Had he hit the beast?

With a pop, his ears cleared. All was quiet, save for the pounding of his heart and his own harsh breath. Finally the darkness took shape. Ten feet away lay the motionless boar.

Nicholas shuddered. It wouldn't be long before another predator discovered him. Weakened and one-armed, he could not reload. He would simply have to keep going.

Gritting his teeth, he stuffed the still-hot firearm into his waistband and set forth once again. For what seemed an eternity, he heard only the sounds of his own boots crunching the fallen leaves.

He pushed on until he could go no farther. Fighting against his own weakness, he braced himself against a tree to keep upright. The hot flush of fever crept through bones that now ached as much as his head. Nicholas rubbed his brow to clear the grogginess. Perhaps he could reach Ashfield before he died. Then they could bury him beside his mother. More likely, he'd be strung from a gibbet as a lesson to others.

But they'd have to catch him first.

A grim smile tugged at his lips. He staggered forward with new determination.

Then up ahead he saw Witches' Rock. Like a familiar scent packed away with clothes in an old trunk, a memory wafted through his muddled mind, and he remembered where safety lay. With sudden certainty, Nicholas knew it was not his fate to die this night. He had come home.

His steps took on new sureness as he skirted the large rock. Another twenty feet or so brought him to a squat freestone structure. Pushing open the wooden door, he fell forward, collapsing onto the hard dirt floor.

My New Cover

I'm so very excited and proud to share the new cover for my first story with The Wild Rose Press. Due for release in the summer of '08, Ransomed Heart is a romantic suspense story about a woman who's desperate to save her horse and the man who's willing to give his life to protect the woman he loves.

Check out my website at www.michellecary.com for more on this story.

Oh and thank you to fellow author Rae Monet who designed this gorgeous cover. You do amazing work, my friend.

Watching You

This is the cover for my new romantic suspense novel due out at The Wild Rose Press early next year. It's a romantic suspense. Here's a taster:

Excerpt

Angeline fought to hold back the tears. Why did Sebastian turn on her like that? It didn't make sense. And if he was going to be so volatile then he could damn well keep his ruddy job! She could just as easily get one elsewhere, and a new home, too.

She paused for a moment to catch her breath. She'd lost her bearings in the deep woods. Should she turn right at the end of the clearing or left? The trees were so thick and dense she couldn't even see the lake house in the distance to gauge her general direction. It had been a long time since she'd been in the woods. Her childish recklessness had made her brave back then. Now, a sense of panic threatened to overwhelm her. Damn the man!

As a child, she'd known the woods well, and even though her parents warned her and William to keep out of them, they hadn't listened. They'd preferred pretending they were in their own little world where they might be jungle explorers or space travellers discovering a new planet.

Hearing a sharp crack behind her, like a twig snapping, she spun around.

No one there. Of course not. How foolish of her to think Sebastian would come after her to apologise.

Reassuring herself that it was a squirrel or rabbit, she took the left turn, which brought her into another wooded area. She was going to arrive some place soon. Common sense told her so. Her father had said that this particular stretch of woods was half a mile long. If she was headed in the right direction, she would arrive back at the house. Otherwise, she would end up at the lake where she could easily find her way home. She would arrive somewhere safely soon, wouldn't she?

She was beginning to feel like a small child again, like the time she and William played hide and seek. No matter how hard she looked, she couldn't find him. After ten minutes, she burst into tears, and William, being the lovely cousin he was, heard her sobs and came immediately to her side. Only now, as the tears finally rolled down her cheeks, there was no one to rescue her.

Crack.

She heard the noise again. The hairs on the back of her neck rose. This was starting to seriously spook her out. Big time. How she wished she'd never stormed off in the first place. She should have known better and realised her employer was a man in pain--emotional pain--and made allowances for that.

She caught a breath and slipped behind a tree, its gnarled trunk damp and mossy to her touch. There was someone out there, she was sure of it. If it was Sebastian, he would rescue her, but she couldn't guarantee it. In any case, she knew he didn't have a lot of time to spare to play games.

As she held her breath, she heard the unmistakeable sound of feet crunching on twigs and the sound of heavy breathing. Someone knew she was here...had followed her. Her heart started to beat like a drum beneath her clothing, her mouth dry with fear.

In the distance, she saw a man dressed in a hooded jacket with a rifle slung over his shoulder. Letting out a breath, she relaxed. It was probably Phil, the game keeper. Perhaps she should call out to him? But her voice was choked from the sobbing.

At least she now had some idea of the general direction to go. She would wait a few minutes, then follow the path he took.

Before she could act on her decision, she felt a gloved hand clamp over her mouth. She struggled to free herself, but her assailant's grip was like steel, dragging her backwards. The sky and treetops above her spun around and around until they became a blur. Coloured spots blinded her vision. Her breathing came in short bursts as she gasped for air. A pungent smelling cloth came over her nose and mouth, making her woozy. She imagined she heard someone call out her name. A swirl of colours danced before her eyes, then everything faded to black as her body hit the ground.

Sundial -- Excerpt & Trailer

Sundial by Carrie LoftyI posted the book trailer for my Dec '07 miniature, "Sundial," winner of the "Through the Garden Gate" contest (vintage). Stop by my blog and let me know what you think!!

And here's an excerpt featuring my time traveler lovers. He's from 1987, she's from 2007, and they're trapped in 1958 Italy. Poor, confused things! But they seem to manage just fine...

Mark smiled in return, but a waiting silence lengthened between them. They'd behaved almost normally for a whole handful of minutes. He'd liked it. Too much.

"You're the first I've met from my future," he said. "I'm always the one feeling like Marty McFly, thinking these people are so quaint and stupid. But you must think that of me."

"Back to the Future?"

"Yeah. I went to see it with my dad. Had a great time."

"God, you really miss him." She covered his hand with hers. The gold figure eights on her bracelet shimmered in the sun. "I left São Paolo for Berkeley when I was eighteen, happy to be free. But I could always call when I was lonely. It was a slow transition to being on my own. I can’t imagine being ripped away before I was ready."

"I don't want your pity, Amber."

"Not pity," she said. "Just glad to understand you. Well, a beginning at least."

He squeezed her hand, the warmth and softness of her skin peeling away his reserve. Mark stared at those intertwined fingers. "I'm sorry for--for how I've acted. I don't know how to be...be myself, I guess. Be honest. Especially with women."

Amber pulled away. She stood, the chair legs scraping the linoleum and splitting the silence. Mark followed her slow progress around the dinette like watching a miracle unfold. She touched the back of his neck. Her fingers slid through his hair and gave a little tug.

"Can I kiss you?" Cheeks the color of sunshine through honey turned rosy. "No, wait," she said. "I'm going to kiss you."

Mark swallowed. "You are?"

"Try and stop me."

He circled her body with his arms and grabbed two handfuls of skirt and thigh, pulling her to straddle his legs. "Not a chance."

***

Have a great week!

Best,
Carrie

Is "Catastrophe" the Cat's Meow?

I'm thrilled to see "Catastrophe," my sweet Champagne Rosette, in the top ten list of the Wild Rose Press bestsellers today! There must be a lot of cat lovers out there--and I thank you all!

What's the story about?
When Polly Griggs receives an eviction notice, she’s devastated and desperate. Where can she go with twenty-three rescued cats? Old, maimed, and crippled, they were abandoned and she was the only person willing to take them in. Her drunken landlord can’t wait to get rid of her and harasses Polly at every opportunity. Little does she know that her academic advice to her handsome neighbor and secret crush, Simon, on how to succeed in his speech class will lead to her own rescue—and love.

Read an excerpt:
The glow of a neon-orange handbill caught Polly’s eye from the end of the hallway, stopping her in her tracks.

“What the…?”

She ran the remaining distance to her apartment door and dropped backpack and grocery bags as she ripped the paper down and read:

“NOTICE TO TENANT— POLLY GRIGGS:
Due to violation of terms of your rental
agreement, you are hereby given 30 days
written notice to vacate the premises.
VIOLATION:
Exceeding number of allowable pets.
You must vacate the premises no later than
NOON, February 8….”

She couldn’t bear to read the rest. Blinking away tears, Polly shoved the notice into a bag and opened her door to a chorus of meows, mrrkrrks, and yowls.

“Yes, yes, my pretties, I’m happy to see you, too.”

Streams of multicolored fur swirled around her legs.

“There you are, Tabbish.” She stroked a raggedy-looking, ancient cat sitting on the arm of a chair. “You’re still with us, I see.”

A small, three-legged cat hopped up on the chair with Tabbish and rubbed her hand with his head.
“Tiny Tim! You know I wouldn’t forget to say hello.” She picked up the little tabby and put him on her shoulder, where he sat like a parrot.

“Happy now?”

He purred and butted her ear in response.

As she unpacked the plastic grocery bags in the galley kitchen, she greeted each cat by name.
“Abbott and Costello, how are you today? Miss Marple, where has your nose been? Sherlock, what have you been investigating? Sir Spots-a-Lot, Harry Spotter, did you tear up that plant?”
She glanced out at her living room.
“Okay, who knocked over the stack of books next to my reading chair? Was it you, Little Jack Horner? Mitzi? Faith? Come on, now, ’fess up! Belinda, Peter and Martha Cratchitt, where is your mother? Is she under the couch again? David Copperfield, where have you disappeared to? Oliver Twist, leave that plastic bag alone.”

She put away cans of cat food and continued to chatter to her adoring audience.
“There was a sale on Friskies, Pip. You and Miss Havisham will be delighted to hear that we are stocked up on the beef and turkey combo. Mrs. Joe, let me get to the tea, please.”
She lifted the old calico cat off the counter, away from the cabinet that held her teas. It was one of her few indulgences: beautiful, aromatic teas with glorious flavors. She opened a tin and inhaled the smoky aroma of lapsang souchong.

“Huckleberry and Jim, you have to move. I don’t want to catch your tails on fire.”
A one-eared brown tabby and a balding black cat hopped down from the counter with twin thuds. She opened another cabinet to get sugar. A cat sat there, staring at her.

“Tom Sawyer! Have you been in there all day?” She laughed and shook her head.
The large, one-eyed, black and white cat leaped down onto the counter. “Mrrrp?”
Her answer to his question was interrupted by a loud thumping at the door that nearly made her drop her mug…

Lost in Paradise Released Today!

I'm thrilled to announce the release of my Champagne Rose, Lost in Paradise!!!

This book has a special place in my heart; it's the first one I ever wrote. To see it published nearly 6 years after I finished the first draft is a happy thing :)

Ashton Kirk, youngest daughter of a prestigious senator, fiancée of a hotshot attorney, and fresh Harvard graduate, is headed for a promising law career when scandal breaks apart her family. Suddenly, she finds herself newly single and ashamed of her name. To escape, she rents an apartment in the sleepy town of Paradise, New Hampshire, where no one knows who she is.

Ashton hopes for solitude, but all bets are off when Eddie West, the town’s most eligible bachelor, moves in downstairs. The brawny auto mechanic loves his women and his cars shiny, sleek, and fast, and when he meets his new housemate, he wastes no time getting friendly. While Eddie is looking for a no-strings romance, though, he gets more than he bargained for in Ash, who sees through his bravado to the pain of a loss too fresh to mention.

Can two people from different worlds find common ground, a place to fall in love and build a future together? Or will Ashton’s past and Eddie’s scars keep them apart just as the summer heat brings them together? Is it possible to find your soul mate in the place you least expect to?

Don't you want to know more? Visit the bookstore at The Wild Rose Press to purchase your very own download of Lost in Paradise (hey, it's Black Friday - those of you in the States are going to be spending money Christmas shopping anyway, right? Why now treat yourself to something too?!)

Released Today! "The Christmas Curse"

Doesn't The Wild Rose Press have the greatest covers? I love mine for "The Christmas Curse" -- released TODAY! What better way to start your Christmas shopping?
The Christmas Curse

For Molly Scott, everything bad in her life has happened during the Christmas season, from training bras in her stocking to being jilted by her fiancé. This year is no exception.

Ten days before Christmas, she arrives at work to find her department closed down and everyone laid off. Desperate, she takes a job for a singing telegram service and, dressed as Mrs. Claus, meets the man of her dreams--who turns out to be a nightmare--in a broken-down elevator. The Christmas Curse is right on track.
================================

WIN your own copy of this -- or your choice of ANY of my stories! It's easy... I'm giving one away today at the LASR "Let's Talk About Romance" Yahoo group! Just join, and post a message--any message--between now and Friday. I'll draw a name on Saturday from the posters to win, Win, WIN!!! If you already own all of my stories (and, hey--why wouldn't you??), I'll buy your choice of any other short story (miniature rose or rosette) from TWRP.

How's that for easy?

Just to whet your appetite, here is the excerpt from "The Christmas Curse":

Late as usual, Molly jogged toward the elevators. The one on the left was just closing, so she hollered, "Hold the door!" and leaped forward, slipping her arm inside the crack. She took a step and jammed the stiletto heel of her boot right into the crack where the elevator car met the floor. She teetered unsteadily, praying she wouldn't break a bone.

The doors lurched open and she lost any hope of staying upright when they did. She tumbled inside, heard the snap of her boot heel breaking and then tumbled onto another occupant, knocking them both to the barely padded floor.

"Oh no, I am so sorry!" She rolled to one side before sitting up to see who had cushioned her fall. The best looking man she'd ever seen lay on the floor, grinning up at her, and making no effort whatsoever to get to his feet.

"My pleasure." He propped his arms under his head. "Truly."

She jumped to her feet, forgetting she'd lost a heel in the door, lost her balance and fell again. At least she managed to land on her hands and knees above him like a bridge and didn't squash him.

"Sorry." She crawled to the door and wiggled the broken heel back and forth until it came out, wondering why the doors hadn't tried closing on her fingers. She glanced over her shoulder to find the man sitting up with his finger on the "Door Open" button.

"Thanks."

"No problem. What floor?"

"I need the penthouse, please."

"That's where I'm heading, too."

She pivoted away from his lopsided grin and nearly stepped on a rather small, ashen-faced man leaning in the corner. His body shuddered when the doors closed and the car started to move.

"Oh-kay…" She was stuck between drop-dead-handsome man and pasty-face man and had to figure out how to do her routine with a broken-heeled boot. She tucked said heel into one of the many pockets in her slicker lining and left the coat hanging open. She hoped the boot could be repaired. But because it was only a week before Christmas, she doubted she'd have any luck with that.

It was a little like the time, eight years before, when she'd performed an aria for the school Christmas program, unaware that two buttons on her dress were undone, thereby flashing the front of her ancient white bra, complete with holes and safety pins.

"So, you were invited to the party upstairs?" Handsome man broke into her thoughts. He climbed to his feet and moved beside her.

Molly nodded.

"I wasn't aware it was a costume party."

She crinkled her nose and shook her head. "I wouldn't know. I'm only the entertainment."

"Ahhh." He reached out a hand and flipped the bells on her collar. "So, Mrs. Claus, is the mister showing up tonight? Because, to be honest, I haven't been very good this year."

She had just opened her mouth to speak when the lights cut off and the elevator ground to a halt. Oh, dear heavens, she'd done it again.

Pushing the gate open

I'm new to blogging, and am unsure how this works. But just to share some information, my miniature has been contracted through the English Tea Rose. I've gone through my first edits and am now trying to decide what's the next step. Do I call the whole extended family with the news, or faint?

Hot Night at the Blue Bug Saloon-Nov. 28 Release

Hi Roses!
Well, it's official...I'll no longer be the red-headed step child but a REAL ROSE and I couldn't be MORE THRILLED. Over the months I've gotten to know so many of you and your collective support and encouragment is more than I could've hoped for in my dealings with The Wild Rose Press and her collective authors.

First of all...thanks for that. Finding a community of women who not only share common interests and goals is amazing in and of itself but the friendship is a heartwarming, thrilling bonus.

Hot Night at the Blue Bug Saloon, a mini Yellow Rose will be released on November 28 and I hope you all will help me as we kick off the first release of the Wayback Texas Series. Wayback is a small Texas town, like so many others, but this one is special because it will be created by WRP authors. What a fun concept!!! I'll tell you right now, this has been a blast! Not only the writing of this book, which we all know can be a lonely process, but the meeting of other authors, sharing ideas and building this exciting, friendly and loving town we call Wayback. Every year from March through November, friendly little Wayback hosts a weekend rodeo that brings in hot cowboys and cowgirls from all over the place and what a blast it is to see how they interact with the "locals". Love is a horseback ride away and is as exciting as an eight second ride on a crazy-wild bull.

Hot Night at the Blue Bug Saloon tells the story of sassy Gina Ballew. Her friends call her the Intimadator because, quite frankly, she's a whole lotta woman and the men in this tiny town find her just a tad...um...SCARY. Scares em straight out of their well-worn cowboy boots. But beneath Gina's lush exterior beats a heart of solid gold. Isn't there one tough cowboy with the courage to take her on?

Nash Logan has faced lots of challenges in his life. Eight seconds on a crazy mad bull? No problem. A wicked ride on a wild bronco? A snap. Nothing prepares him for the thrill ride that is sassy, sexy Gina Ballew. He knows it'll take an easy hand to tame this sweet Texas lady.

Through the Garden Gate -- "Sundial"

Sundial by Carrie LoftyHello! My name is Carrie Lofty, and I've recently joined the TWRP family. My short story, "Sundial," won the Vintage category of the Through the Garden Gate contest. I am so happy to present this cover, designed by Nicola Martinez, which is both gorgeous and true to the story. I couldn't have asked for anything better. "Sundial" will be published in December.

Here's the blurb:
Amber Schulman stepped into a lush English garden in 2007, only to arrive in breathtaking Sorrento, Italy--in 1958. The only person who understands her confusion is fellow time traveler Mark Lacey, a New Yorker who comes from the land of cassette tapes and Reaganomics. His dark, world-weary eyes beckon her with secrets and sensuality. But why does he seem so familiar?

Trapped in the past since he was a teen, Mark wants nothing to do with another whining newcomer. But the blue-eyed Aussie might be able to answer the one question that haunts him: Do I ever get back to 1987? From soccer to samba to sex, Amber tempts him with a zeal for life and love, pulling him free of his lonely isolation.

But getting home proves easier than they imagined. How will their love endure when Amber returns to her time--and Mark to his?
My debut novel, WHAT A SCOUNDREL WANTS--a swashbuckling love story that picks up Will Scarlet's story where the old Robin Hood legends leave off--will be a December 2008 Zebra Debut release from Kensington. While my website is undergoing renovations, please visit my TWRP bio page or my personal blog, Salome's Corner.

Through the Garden Gate/ Cover: Fairytale Bride

I don't know what else to say other than a grateful 'thank you' to Nicola Martinez. My story has been interpreted perfectly in this cover.

Ripples in the Water- Available now
Fairytale Bride- coming soon (December 2007) to The Wild Rose Press

Treacle Toffee and Ripples in the Water

November 5th, a date greatly remembered in England with fireworks, treacle toffee and the burning of effigies depicting Guy Fawkes, the most noted terrorist in English history, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament back in 1604. The infamous Gunpowder Plot.

Ripples in the Water is a story that takes the reader back in time to the Protestant court of King James, to the ambitious courtiers vying for the king's favour, to the daughter of a Catholic traitor condemned to die for her father's part in the Gunpowder Plot.

So, I say- cuddle up to the fire with a bag of treacle toffee and enjoy a winter's tale: Ripples in the Water

Busy, Busy

I have less than 2 days before I leave for a month in South Africa. LOTS of loose ends to tie up. I won't have much internet access while I'm there, but if I do, I'll try to post updates on my Blog.

Meanwhile, I'm working on galleys for Hurricane Breeze. I firmly believe typos happen when you shut off your computer. I asked 3 friends to read the galleys, after I went through them, plus two editors. All 3 found little glitches -- and they all found DIFFERENT ones.

Here's the cover, though. I like it a lot. What do you think?

Back to laundry and packing. Ugh.

Excellent Review for CORN MAZE

Diana from Night Owl Romance gave Corn Maze a score of 4 out of 5 which translates as "A Page Turner"!

Here's a snippet of her review:
I really enjoyed this story. This is my second time reviewing a Deb Logan book and I love the way she writes such creative stories for young adults...For anyone who has children, or for anyone who wants to read stories from a good storyteller, I would definitely recommend a Deb Logan story.
