A Trail of Love Gets An Outstanding Read from Simply Romance Reviews

I'm just so thrilled to say that my recent release, a contemporary romance set in the majestic splendor of Glacier National Park, Montana, called "A Trail of Love" received an Outstanding Read from Simply Romance Reviews. Here is what Laura has to say:

"I really enjoyed reading A Trail of Love by Bess McBride. I read it straight through with only a brief break for obvious reasons.... Trust me when I say that the ending is well worth it. I can’t recall the last time I read a book that left me on the edge of my seat, shushing my kids and husband, dying to find out how each of the characters would react to the twists and turns that molded them into who they are. I was blown away by the inner strength of an abused woman and the love and persistence of a sympathetic man and how they found their way into each other’s arms in spite of life’s pits and potholes."

A Contest for Banned Books Week!

Did you know that the last week in September is always named "Banned Books Week" by the American Library Association? Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year:

"Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. This year, 2008, marks BBW's 27th anniversary (September 27 through October 4).

"BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.

"BBW is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Library Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association of American Publishers, National Association of College Stores, and is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress."

Want to know more about BBW? Click here.

In honor of Banned Books Week, I'm holding a contest this week on my blog to celebrate! Because, honestly, as an author myself, I cannot imagine someone else passing judgement on my works to the extent that they decide someone else should not be able to read them.

Want to enter my contest? It's easy. Every day this week, I'm going to be blogging about a book I've read that's listed as one of the Top 100 Banned Books 1990-2000. Every comment you leave on my blog this week will earn you a contest entry. Even better: add the title of a book you've read, also from this list, and your thoughts on it, and I'll give you a second contest entry.

What can you win? A download of my latest novel, plus your choice from my overflowing library of gently loved books, and a really cool hand-beaded key chain (a crafty friend just hooked me up with some lovely ones).

I'll draw names randomly from all contest entries and announce 2 winners - yes, 2! - on my blog Saturday, October 4th. This week, let's celebrate the wonderful freedom we enjoy to read whatever books we choose - and encourage others to continue to allow this freedom to exist!

Come on by my blog today to see the first featured Banned Book...

A Brand New Cover

Just wanted to show off my new cover for my Civil War romance, Confederate Rose, just contracted by The Wild Rose Press.

Nicola Martinez designed the cover. Isn't it gorgeous?

Here's the blurb:

Disguised as a man to serve with her husband as a soldier in the Confederate Army, Irish immigrant, Katie Rose O'Reilly, vows to remain in the ranks and seek revenge on Yankees after her husband is killed at Sharpsburg. As she's transporting mail from Richmond back to camp, a stranger startles her, causing her to fall and almost drown in a swollen stream.

Southerner Alexander Hart, a Yankee spy, saves Katie from drowning, then nurses her through a resulting fever. He must keep his identity secret from the beautiful Rebel soldier even as he finds himself falling in love with her.

Katie falls in love with the caring gentlemen stranger, only to later discover he's the enemy. Heartbroken, she turns him in to the Confederates, but then questions her goals and beliefs. Is it possible to put aside her quest for revenge to save the man she loves?

RR@H Reviews gives Do Or Die Top Pick Rose!!!

Below is just a portion of what Susan Barton at Romance Reader at Heart had to say about Do Or Die. I've included the link to the full review at the end of this post. I was so thrilled to get the first review for Do Or Die and it made it even sweeter when I found out that Susan had given it a top pick rose rating. Thank you so much, Susan!!! I can't say how much it means to me to see someone who felt the story the way I'd intended for the reader to feel it.
Thanks again!
Have a great weekend everyone!
~Marly
Mathews creates a great Bogey and Bacall romance for Shylah and Grayson, who despite their seeming ability to do anything and get anywhere at the drop of a hat—she hates how cramped up she gets in her hover car during the 10 minutes it takes to get from a friend's pub in Ireland to her family's mansion in Vermont—they are deathly afraid that the other person will realize how unworthy they are of their love and break off their relationship. They are both so dedicated to the other, but so insecure at the same time. The one thing that makes for an interesting adventure is that several of the characters are not who they are supposed to be. There are impersonators, of both specific people as well as people just trying to hide their identities. And in order to accomplish several things, Grayson needs to inhabit other people's bodies. At one point, I felt like I'd get whiplash looking from character to character, trying to untangle who everybody really was. Many of the secondary characters and their situations are even funnier than those of Grayson (who sounds very British to me) and Shylah, who kicks ass first and asks questions later if she feels like it.

DO OR DIE is a terrific mélange of mystery, intrigue, romance, and betrayal all set in the future which enables people to be anything the author can contrive. Readers who enjoy a little chocolate with their peanut butter—Sci-Fi with romance—will find this couple endearing and cheer them on throughout their exploits.

New Review for Eternity Waits!

I just got a new review for my short vampire romance story, Eternity Waits, available now from TWRP. This one's from Simply Romance Reviews.

I'll quote a few lines: "Susan Macatee takes the eternal search for love, mixes in some vampires and war, and tosses in some reincarnation to top things off. This is a very short read but all in all enjoyable. I look forward to seeing more from Ms. Macatee."

Good Luck!

Contest Excerpt:

Claire’s head hurt. Bad. Her vision blurred and she closed her eyes. After a moment, she tested her sight again. She didn’t recognize the ceiling. A fluorescent light was turned off. Thank God for small miracles. It was dusk. Or was it dawn?

The gray light filtered in through a window. It was hard to discern. A long curtain hung on a track from the ceiling to her left. A dividing curtain. Was this a hospital room? She struggled to sit up, but everything started spinning.

“Claire, it’s okay. You’re going to be okay. Just lie down and rest for now.”

That voice…that deep masculine voice…it was quite sexy.Where had she heard it before?A large hand covered hers. It was warm and big. Gentle. Someone caressed her forehead, and pushed her hair back. She felt safe. Her body relaxed. Sleep beckoned.

****

Jake settled back into his chair. He’d been worried about her, but he knew she was going to be okay. He was more concerned about the man who’d assaulted her and what his plans were. So concerned, in fact, that since he didn’t know the situation, he’d gone out on a limb. Way out on a limb. He leaned his head forward and held it in his hands.

He’d claimed to be her husband in order to stay with her and protect her. He justified his uncharacteristic irrational decision by telling himself that he was in the business of saving lives, not throwing them to the wolves. His position as Director of the Emergency Room gave him an advantage, as well. People knew him and accepted his word. They were shocked when he’d told them, of course, but after the initial gasping, they’d accepted it.

He was taking an awfully huge risk in doing what he was doing, but somehow he felt he didn’t have any other choice. He didn’t trust the bastard who’d assaulted her. Plain and simple. He’d seen that crazed look plenty of times in the emergency room. And he’d been correct in his assumption that the asshole would make bail.

After a discreet inquiry through a friend at the police station, he’d found out he had walked. He shook his head in the quiet hospital room and looked at Claire. How could he leave her unprotected? He hated the loopholes in the legal system. The brick wall he’d hit with her identity was bothering him but he gave his trusted friend at the police station, a detective for thirty years, the honest story and Max was looking into it. Though Max had grumbled about the deception, he’d reluctantly agreed that Jake was probably protecting Claire better than they could—off the record, of course.

Jake had confidence that he’d hear information as soon as his friend uncovered it. If she had any family, they would have to be notified. He prayed he’d done the right thing.

Contest question:

Why is Jake praying he's done the right thing?
Hint: Read the blurb from the book posted below, or on my website to compliment excerpt.

...Life Begins in Arizona available digitally now at The Wild Rose Press, and next March in print at Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon and other book sellers.

Life Begins In Arizona blurb:

Claire Stevens, an Emergency Department physician who escaped a violent marriage, is living proof that abuse can happen to anyone. New to Wickenburg, Arizona, she is settling into her home when her ex-husband is released from jail…and finds her. Waking up in the hospital, bruised and battered, she discovers she is married to her neighbor—who happens to be her new boss.

At least that’s the story people believe.Jake Cooper is the first man who has stirred Claire’s pulse in five years. She finds his charm hard to resist, but in hindsight realizes she has emotional scars that are getting in her way. If her fear of relationships doesn’t strangle her, her ex-husband, who is out on bail, just might.

Released August 2008

I'm so excited about my newest release from The Wild Rose Press. For months I waited for the release, and then I sat back and chewed my fingernails wondering what the reviewers would say. It brought such a rush of happiness to receive a "5 heart" review from The Romance Studio.

Dee Dailey, September 17, 2008 wrote the review. Here's a snippet ... "This book with its superb storyline has all of the good things that a book can have to keep us reading. Characters, dialogue, suspense all are penned in a way that I think are excellent. The book just naturally flows to a fantastic conclusion. If you need a book to lift you up, this is the one to read. But make sure you have a lot of tissues handy for the tears of frustration and joy that are sure to flow as the story unfolds." Click here to read the full review. Two More Days Until Do Or Die Releases!!!

PhotobucketHey Everyone!
I'm excited to announce that Do Or Die will be available in ebook format from The Wild Rose Press in just two days!!! I had such a blast writing Do Or Die as it is non stop action from beginning to end. If you like adventure stories with a big dash of romance this one will cater to your tastes. It's also a futuristic so if you're a fan of Sci-Fi Do Or Die will also be right up your alley. I hope it appeals to a wide range of readers for various reasons.

If you recognize the heroine's name, Shylah, you might be remembering it from reading my author bio. Our one Yorkshire Terrier was named for the Shylah in Do or Die, and I think her spunky tenacious attitude mirrors the Shylah McKay in Do Or Die to a pretty perfect 'T'.

Do Or Die will be available in Paperback on October 10, 2008 from Amazon and B&N!!!! The awesome cover was designed by Rae Monet! Thank you again, Rae!
Here's the blurb:
Do Or Die By Marly Mathews
Futuristic Paranormal Romance
The world has changed. Ten years ago, Earth nearly crumbled beneath the might of an intergalactic War. Their Enemy fought them with their destructive psychokinetic powers. Only a band of extraordinary humans stood in their path. They were known as the Gemini Order. Led by Shylah McKay, they saved Earth from ruination.

Now, Shylah McKay and her kind are being persecuted for the very talents that saved Earth. But Shylah's a mover and a shaker, and with her lover Grayson by her side, she'll go to the ends of the Earth and beyond to fight for her people.

Here's an excerpt from Do Or Die to give you a sneak peek!

Grayson stared at the woman. Didn’t she know
who he was? What he was?
The woman intrigued him. Sparks had flown
between them. She was definitely special—she
looked at him as if he were her savior.
He had to help her. He knew that in an instant.
His eyes locked on hers again. He was in love.
One look—that was it. He glanced at the insignia on
her yellow uniform. She was part of the much-
revered Gemini Order. She had to be one hell of a
powerful woman.
He knelt beside her. For some reason he could
touch her...he didn’t understand that. They had to
be bonded in some way. It could only be a
supernatural bond.
Predestined.
“I’m going to touch you again, Captain.”
“Call me, Shylah. Just, Shylah.”
His heartbeat quickened. Her voice was heaven.
Willing all of his energy to him, he leaned down and
gathered her in his arms. He stood up, cradling her
against his chest.
“Shylah.” Her name rolled off his tongue like
music. His voice was a caress and she relaxed.
“Take me, here.” She pressed her hand against
his chest, and a sudden image entered his mind.
She was a telepath.
He’d known the members of The Gemini Order
were skilled, but not all were telepaths.
He nodded his head. “Your wish is my
command.” He took to the sky. It was a miracle he
had found her. She could be his salvation.
“I feel as if we’ve met before.” She tilted her
head toward him, and he drank in the beauty of her
stunning eyes. They seemed to engulf her entire
face. “You feel familiar.” He sighed. He would never
get enough of listening to her voice.

Available September 12, 2008 from The Wild Rose Press!

My second cover from The Wild Rose Press!

Funny how getting something good in your email can brighten up a dreary day. This morning I received the cover art for my story, The Duende and the Muse, to be released by The Wild Rose Press.

Another outstanding cover art work by Nicola Martinez! Thanks so much, Nicola!

This story's one of my favorites, since it's about a frustrated writer. But the main characters are Melinda the Muse, who's also frustrated with the writer, and Devon, a duende, or demon muse.

Here is the story blurb:
Melinda the Muse's student isn't writing much these days. When Devon the duende shows up, is he there to steal her student, or her heart?

And here is a sneak preview:
Melinda is startled when she notices a dark figure leaning against a booth across the aisle. He stands out like a charcoal etching against the background of clouds – harsh outlines, jagged features. Menacing yet compelling. He smiles, and lightning flashes from his dazzling white teeth, zinging through her.
She’s never seen a muse like him, but he must be one – otherwise he wouldn’t be here. He wouldn’t be stepping toward her with the intensity of a jaguar, a laserlight in his eye, teeth bared in a hungry smile.
This guy looks like a Vanity Fair ad – layered hair mussed just so, sandals with a jacket and jeans that fit really well. She runs her hand across her belly to quell the tiny pinpricks. She’s been so busy with work lately, she hasn’t met anyone new.
“Who’s that?” Her wings can’t beat fast enough to cool the heat rising from deep inside her.
Calliope turns to Euterpe. “Oh my. How did he get in here?”
Euterpe squints in his direction, then furrows her brow. “A duende. They’ll let anyone in these days.”
That explains it. Melinda’s heard of them -- said to be a combination of charm, magic, inspiration, fire, magnetism – and demon. Muses were warned at an early age not to take up with duendes. Tales of muse-duende liaisons were fraught with disaster and downfall – for the muse. Duendes managed to carry on unscathed, though their methods of inspiration could be deadly for their students.
The thought vanishes quicker than a flicker of sunlight on water as he moves toward her and says hello in a voice whose timbre resounds within her.
“Hi.” She stares, entranced by his dark beauty.
His smile envelops her. “I’m Devon.”
She extends her hand. “I’m Melinda. So nice to meet you.” Fire sparks in her fingers as he takes her hand in his, then leans to kiss it.
A tingling crawls up her arms and neck and into her head, where it scrambles her thoughts.
His gaze lingers on her lips, and they quiver open like a rosebud blooming in sunlight.
His voice is like a hot wind in the desert. “The pleasure’s all mine.”
Oh, she doubts it. “Are you here for the entire weekend?”
His glittering black eyes wander across her body, sending a shiver of molten heat to her core.
Oh, she’s in trouble. Deep trouble.
A smile flickers on his lips. “Now I wish I were. I have other business, unfortunately.”
Her voice wilts like a thirsty flower. “I’m sorry to hear that.” She clears her throat. “You know, because the sessions look so enticing this year.”
“Yes, enticing.” He leans closer, close enough to kiss her. The center of his eyes swirl like a gathering storm.
“Melinda,” Euterpe croaks. “The first session is beginning. You should get a good seat.”
Melinda’s more stern than she intends. “I’ll be right there.”
Devon backs away, one bare foot at a time. “Enjoy MuseFest. Maybe I’ll see you around.”
Yes, yes, please, Zeus.
“Maybe.” She follows Calliope and Euterpe to the tented area where signs blink the schedule and announcements.
He’s still watching her. She can tell by the heat traveling up her thighs.
When it fades, she glances back. He’s gone.
The cloud feels so much emptier, though muses teem through the air.

The Jinx

Good Tuesday night to you!

I'm so excited to share with you this great review from Long and Short Reviews www.longandshortreviews.com/

What a hoot! Rabbits, and lost keys, and accidents, oh my! This book kept me turning pages just to see what mess Richard and Ellen would get into next.

Ellen is certain she’s a jinx, because from the moment she met Richard and he sliced his hand open in her bedroom, nothing has gone well. Even their first kiss ended in an accident! Enter Hoss the rabbit – because if one rabbit’s foot is good luck, then four must be truly excellent!

But still the mishaps continue. Big or little, poor Richard and Ellen can’t catch a break, and despite their desperate attraction for one another, Ellen is certain she’ll kill him if she sticks around... so she decides: No. More. Dates.

The author’s skillful writing and slightly warped sense of humor make this a thoroughly delightful read. The fun never stops, and the sexual tension is high from the first few pages until the very end of the book. Every single scene is handled believably, and I had a smile on my face throughout.

Jennifer Johnson is a romantic comedy author to watch. Even better, a little bird told me she has another novel forthcoming... I’ll be first in line to snatch it up. If you’re a fan of fun, I highly recommend you grab this book and plop it on your keeper shelf.

Isn't that awesome?! Go into their non-whipped cream section (LASR) and look at the Author Spotlight. Enter for your chance to win a gift certificate to Wild Rose Press and a cute denim tote.

My first review!

My first novel, Starquest, a futuristic romance, was released on Friday 29th August, just over a week ago. I was thrilled to receive a lovely review from Amylove at Writers and Readers of Distinctive Fiction:

I’ve posted it below: I was so nervous it took me ages to actually read it!

Review of Starquest by Amylove (reproduced with permission)

http://romancewriterandreader.ning.com/

“'Starquest' by Hywela Lyn is a sweet and wonderful book. It is a story of Jess who travels across the galaxy to find the love of her life. An incident happen to her that makes her lost her memories and the man that she loves. She woke up with nightmares and a strong desire to find Destiny and her crew, especially the blue-eyes man who makes her tingles and her hearts ache. But her head hurts every time she tried to remember, and she needs to find Destiny to get the last piece of the missing puzzle in her brain.

Jess made a pact with Dahll to help her with her quest. But she was not aware that he has his own reason to help her. He has a secret, so deep that it can jeopardize their journey and their life. A woman with a mission, a man hunted by a killer, little did they know the journey will test their courage, trust, and most of all, their heart.

This is a wonderfully written book that will keep you on your toes and ended with a big smile on your face. An adventure like no other, this is a book that you don’t want to miss big time."

BACK IN PUBLISHING LIMBO

So what does one do when back in limbo?

Well, that's easy I write and put together promo spots until my brain hurts. I've
set myself up to write 1200 words a day. It's kind of a pass or fail basis. See Megan Run is coming out October 29th and I have guest blogs lined up on the 30th and the 31st. AND an interview the first week of November. I'll also run a contest ten days prior to my release date. It'll be a trivia sort of thing. Only goodness knows what else I can think up from now to October.

But will of this get you readers to Wild Rose to buy See Megan Run?

Probably not, but I promise to at least be entertaining. It'll help keep my sanity while I wait for the official Multi-published title. It's been a good year for Melissa Blue and it can only get better.

But if you want to try me out for size, you can check out my debut novel, How Much You Want to Bet? Or read an excerpt of See Megan Run.

Until then, I'm Melissa Blue and I'm out.

Two stories set in the 1920s

Hello, it's Vintage Rose/LROS month at The Wild Rose Press! I have two short stories set in the 1920s out. They are two in a series, "Copacetic" and "Baby Vamp." These are the stories of twin sisters. Claire becomes a flapper, and her sister Margaret is old-fashioned and holds onto her Edwardian ways. Both ladies run into serious trouble during their search for happiness, and all their dreams are threatened. Claire must use her cleverness, and Margaret her values to stand a chance of reaching their dreams in "the lawless decade." I hope you'll take a peek at my stories! Thanks, and take care. -Sincerely, Laura Hogg

Starquest is available now!

My romantic fantasy/futuristic novel was released last Friday and is currently No 2 in the Faery Rose line of The Wild Rose Press. I am so thrilled that this book, which I loved writing and means so much to me, is finally out there!

BLURB:

When Jestine Darnell is rescued from her sabotaged starship by the crew of the Destiny her only objective is to complete her mission and keep her promise to save a world from slavery. Love is the last thing on her mind. However, she has not counted on losing her heart to Kerry Marchant the ship’s second in command, who makes his distrust of her painfully obvious, despite the chemistry between them. The completion of her mission has consequences that neither of them could have foreseen.

Enter Dahll Tarron, who becomes involved in a long and dangerous quest to find the Destiny. Fates become intertwined, perils shared, culminating in the realization that sometimes love may be so close that there is a danger it will not be recognized until it is too late…

EXCERPT

In this excerpt, Jess has been rescued from her stricken ship by the starship Destiny and is trying to fit in as one of the crew:

Kerry, by contrast to the rest of the crew, was something of an enigma to Jess. She noticed his attitude toward her becoming increasingly cool. Quietly spoken, often taciturn, he was clearly possessed of a brilliant mind. Although slow to volunteer information, if she asked a specific question relating to either the Destiny or Metisa, he became completely involved with the subject, explaining simply but precisely. However, she could not persuade him to talk about himself, which naturally made her all the more curious about him. She frequently felt his scrutiny as if he were waiting for her to give herself away, although she could think of nothing she had said or done to arouse his suspicions. This was not the only thing about Kerry she found disturbing.

She was coming to know the ship almost as well as she had known her own vessel. A skilled pilot herself, she was happy to tackle many of the routine operating tasks, plus some of those that were not so routine. Despite his aloofness, she found herself learning a great deal from Kerry. She observed the way he handled the ship, the instructions he gave to the computers. It seemed like second nature to him.

On one occasion, at Jon’s direction, she was perfecting a complicated navigational manoeuvre with the manual controls, under Kerry’s supervision. “She’s a large, powerful ship,” he said, “and needs handling with a delicate touch. Too much pressure and you would lose her.” Jess glanced at him, frowning. Perhaps the ship wasn’t the only thing that needed delicate handling. He placed his hands lightly over hers to guide them, and to her embarrassment, she felt her heart thud uncomfortably against her ribs and a blush of colour burn her cheeks.

“This is exactly the position these controls need to be in relation to each other, when the readings here, and here, correspond to the coordinates already set.”

To her relief, he appeared not to notice her unease. For a moment, his eyes met hers. She saw they were no longer expressionless, but alight with the pride and enthusiasm he felt for the ship. She looked away quickly to concentrate on the data in front of her, forcing herself to ignore the feelings stirring deep within her. She felt privileged that he and Jon allowed her to handle the controls, and determined to make the most of the opportunity to pilot the immense starship, without any distraction. Besides, she had a mission to accomplish. She had enough to worry about; she didn’t need added complications. She thought of the blaster hidden in her cabin. All the crew had free access to the ship’s arsenal, and because there was no one else on board the ship, there was no reason for stringent security. She’d found it relatively easy to take the gun when no one was around, but she knew if its loss was discovered she would have to act very quickly.

TRAILER

To add the icing to the cake I received the cover for the sequel 'Children Of The Mist' currently in edits, on the same day. It's exactly as I pictured this particular scene and I'm thrilled with it.

The talented Tamra Westbury designed all three of my covers.
