The story takes place in a high school in 1949. Zack Thompson is crazy about Gloria Garner but he feels he doesn't have a chance to land a date with her. Several obstacles lie in his path. His own doubt about his looks, Gloria's strict mother who won't let Gloria date anyone other than the top atheletes in school, Zack's lack of ability in sports. Gloria is beautiful, having been elected to the esteemed title of Basketball Queen four years now. She knows Zack exists but does she know the extent of his affection for her? She senses she can take advantage of Zack when she needs help. Other obstacles presents themselves as well during Zack's quest to date Gloria.
