ANOTHER INTRODUCTION

Hi, my name is Lyn although I write as 'Hywela Lyn' (my first two names). I thought it was about time I introduced myself. I have recently had my first novel, a romantic science fantasy accepted by Amy Herald of the Wild Rose Press for the 'Faery Rose' line. I'm really thrilled about this and am currently working on the sequel.

I live in England, although I was born and lived most of my life in rural Wales which I love dearly. I am very fond of all animals, especially horses and have three of my own, which I ride 'Western' style. I enjoy reading romantic fiction, especially Westerns and Science Fiction, although I will read anything. I'm so happy to be a member of the Wild Rose 'garden' and am enjoying reading the blog entries here.

The promise of springtime

Am I a supple stem, flush with new growth, or am I a brittle remnant of last year's heyday? That's what I'm thinking about as I look out my window today. Long supple strands of pampas grass out there in my setting of coastal Georgia, but many of you in the north have the delight of ice and snow.

Winter is drawing to a close, and with it comes the promise of spring. What will spring bring for you? A bountiful season of sowing new stories? A look back at past bountiful harvests?

For me, spring is a wonderful time of awakening. Just like our romances have black moments, our ardous winters prepare us for the glory of spring, and, I hope, many wonderful new and exciting stories at The Wild Rose Press.
Be sure and check out my House of Lies. Here's a recent reveiw: "Sparks fly as two well-crafted characters tangle with a crafty villain in House of Lies. Maggie Toussaint is an author to watch!" --Tracy Montoya, Harlequin Intrigue author.

Tips for New Writers

Hi! My name is Sonja Foust and I'm a new author at the Wild Rose Press. I'm excited to be a part of such a smart and sassy crowd. I wanted to make an appearance on the blog as soon as I heard one existed. (I know, I'm such a pop culture hoochie, but I absolutely love blogs.) But I wanted to make sure I had something to offer first. So here you go, and I hope you find it helps you out!

I know a lot of the readers of this blog are also writers, so I've put together a list of tips for new writers (romance or otherwise) that I've learned from personal experience. Enjoy!

1. Write what you love. Don't write for the market. Don't target. I know some people say it's a good idea, but I can't work like that. Especially on your first book, write about what you love. It will be better that way, I promise.

2. If you don't know what you love, take some time to figure it out. If you get part-way into a book and don't love it, it's ok to stop and start again. Sometimes it takes a few false starts.

3. Write an entire book before you start pitching around to editors and agents.

4. Make a schedule with deadlines and keep working on a project always. Don't wait around for people to get back to you. Push ahead.

5. Get a website! Believe it or not, agents and editors actually do look at them. I've heard of cases where an editor/agent rejected a manuscript that a writer sent in, but then asked to see a different one that was listed on the writer's website. That's why I keep a list of completed and in progress books as well as a list of "proposals," which are really just blurbs of ideas for books I haven't had time to write yet, but will eventually. Usually only published authors get to work from proposals (the lucky dogs), but it can't hurt to have a few floating around, just in case.

6. Have a Bad Day project. I'm moody, I admit. This is the reason I keep a Bad Day manuscript around to work on when I'm just not in a Happily Ever After mood. I may never finish it, and even if I do, I'm willing to bet no one will publish it (at least not any romance line), but at least I'm working, even when I can't squeeze out any rainbows. And who knows? Maybe when it's done, I will have written the next Catcher in the Rye. Mother would be so proud.

What are your tips and tricks from personal experience? Please leave a comment if you've got a tip, and stop by my blog sometime! I love visitors!

Romance Readers' Pet Peeves

Just introducing myself here. I'm a new Wild Rose Press Author, new to TWRP, not to writing of course. We're all romance writers here but as well as that, we are romance readers. [At least we ought to be if we write in that genre!] I thought I'd share this article with you. I wrote it some time back-- it's regarding romance readers' pet peeves. Read the article and let me know what your pet peeves are!

Romance Readers' Pet Peeves

I thought it might be a good idea to talk about over-used phrases in romance novels and short stories. This isn't just for me to have a moan and groan, but for you writers to consider avoiding over-use.

We've all done it at some time or another -- picked up a book by a well known or even not so well known author and put it down again, wondering if it is worth carrying on reading through to the end.

Why? We've got fed up of over-used phrases. I'll give you an example. Recently, I got into the writing of a popular romance novelist. Her books excited me, I couldn't put them down. After reading 3 of them, I purchased yet another, only to be very disappointed. I got the impression this was a book she had written in haste.

Why? She used the same phrase over and over. She used it so much in her book, it's now my most hated phrase. What is it? "She rolled her eyes."

I know a lot of writers use this phrase from time to time. I think they can get away with it if it's used very sparingly. Personally, I don't like the phrase, as to me, it conjures up visions of two disembodied eyes being rolled across the floor. I rarely use it.

The author used this phrase so much, I even found it used twice in the same sentence! I got the impression the book she had written, although the plot was excellent, was written in a hurry.

Another phrase I've noticed popping up in romance novels is the 'over-stuffed armchair'. To be honest, I'm not even sure what an over-stuffed armchair looks like. Is a chair like this so bad that polyester filling oozes from its insides? Do customers have a right to complain if they have purchased an 'over-stuffed armchair'?

"Dear Sir:

The armchair I purchased from your store last week looks decidedly over-stuffed. If you do not send someone around to remove some of the stuffing, then I shall be forced to contact the 'Armchair Police', who will investigate the case.

Yours,

Mrs. Couch Potato."

Other readers have their say:

* How did she manage that?

Ami Weaver says the phrase she dislikes is: "She schooled her features..." Ami goes on to say: "How do you school your features? This one is perhaps not overly common, but there is one author in the category romance arena that uses it constantly. And it makes me cringe."

* How ridiculous!

Hilary Evans from Iowa says: "I review erotica on a regular basis, and I have to say my pet peeve is any pair of 'moist panties' throughout the novel. It's the most ridiculous saying, and some authors just use it over and over and over. Ugh!"

* Was she right or was she wrong?

Heather Truett says: "I recently read Queenmaker by India Edghill, and she ended almost every chapter with ‘She thought she knew, but she was wrong.’ Now, I notice that kind of phrase everywhere. Every character always thinks they know..."

* Over-active head movements

Amie Cleghorn says: "I read this book one time where 'She tossed her head' all the time. When she wasn't tossing her head, she was shrugging her shoulders. And, yes, she could speak!"

What over-used phrases do you dislike when reading a novel or short story?

Well I'll just get back to my over-stuffed armchair, sit down for a read, toss my head and roll my eyes, thus schooling my features. Hopefully, I won't have to step over any moist panties en route!

A New Way To Celebrate Valentine's Day

Halloween has been designated as the official Wild Rose Press Editor Appreciation Day, BUT ...

What could be more appropriate than a day full of red velvet roses, deep dark chocolate and loads of LOVE to give special recognition to the editors (authors & readers too) who devote their lives to celebrating romance?!

So Happy Valentine's Day to the significant others who make our hearts beat in a strong and steady rhythm of love.

Happy, Happy Unofficial Romance Editor/Author/Reader Appreciation Day to all ... especially Roseann Armstrong, Senior Editor of Champagne Rose!

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Remember the days when all your Valentines gift giving could be taken care of with one box of twenty-four cartoon Valentines, complete with heart shaped suckers? If only life stayed so simple, and postage free.

I know I have friends and family I need to send cards to, but by the time I get organized enough to buy the cards, find my address book to get them where they need to be, and head off to the post office to mail them because I am out of stamps...it's May. It's embarassing to send a Valentine to people who get your birthday card to you on time.

This year, I am solving that problem. I'm sending my nearest and dearest e-book Rosettes from Wild Rose Press. They are so short even the e-book phobic can take the time to read them, and have a but of romance to put a smile in their day. Not that I'd tell them, but Rosettes are cheaper than a card, and don't even require postage! Go on, spread the love!

Valentine's Day is a-coming!

Valentine's Day. A time for cards. For flowers. For chocolates. And for books. Why not send your Mom an e-book this year? It will take her mind off of the solitaire, bridge, and freecell she's playing on the computer!
Anyone have an amusing story for Valentine's Day? Here's mine. Some years back, my husband and I were looking at lawn tractors on Valentine's Day. While some may not think this was romantic, we wanted one heavy duty enough for a snow blade, and they sometimes go on sale in February. Anyway, due to the cold winter temperatures, my wedding ring slipped off, unnoticed. Back at the car, I noticed it was missing. And then I got all weepy and distraught. My husband combed the car, the snowy parking lot, and the store, until we found it on the deck of a tractor we'd climbed all over. We were so relieved and happy we went out for ice cream. Never did get that tractor, but the ring - I still treasure it.

New Interview - Christine Columbus

Have you hopped over to my blog to check out last Thursday's interview with Christine Columbus, one of The Wild Rose Press fabulous authors? If not, I'm sure Christine would appreciate you checking it out and leaving her a comment. She's a very warm, and fun personality.

http://carolannerhardt.blogspot.com

The flip side of writing - Marketing

Hey out there!

I wanted to share my thoughts about marketing. We've got a great marketing department at The Wild Rose Press, and I strongly urge new authors to follow their advice. You can have the greatest book in the world, but it won't sell if folks don't know about it.

Be forewarned that marketing takes chunks of time away from writing. Once your book comes out, you have to apportion your time to do both, and its best if you get started before that all important release date. Get your website up and running, link it to a lot of other sites, and encourage people to visit your site. While you're cruising through cyberspace, notice what other authors are doing. Are they holding contests? Are they using a unique hook to steer people to their site? Brainstorm ways to drive people to your website.

Write a writing article or two and get them published. RWA chapter newsletters are always looking for articles from their members, as are most writing magazines. You might write an article for your local paper, or interview an established author in your town or online. These are all ways to develop recognition of your name and your book title.

Develop marketing materials. Maybe it will be book marks or fliers. Maybe you'll chose to write a newsletter each month. Whatever you do, develop a mailing list of people who are interested in what you do. Keep that list current and use it to promote your work.
Make personal appearances. Online this translates to author days and chats. For a print book, this means signings and appearances. Appearances aren't bad for e-book authors either. Conferences, writers organizations, yahooloops, whatever - get your name out there. Have a signature tagline of a line or two that tells about your release and how to get it.

Consider doing a book trailer. This effort will take time from writing, but the multi-media approach may very well pull in more sales. And sales is what publishing is all about. Writing is personal, but publishing is about sales.

Get out there, troops! Sell those books!

A Beautiful Book Cover

I am so excited. Yesterday I received my print copy of FOXFIRE. What a lovely cover! My husband oohed and aahed it too!

FOXFIRE is a romantic suspense in the Crimson Rose line if you'd like to check it out. The colors are so vivid and eye catching!

I believe the covers for Wild Rose Press are some of the most impressive in the market. HIT AND RUN, my first release in the Crimson Rose line was fabulous, too.

Eating Humble Pie

Hello everyone. Long time since I've posted, but wanted to take this opportunity to eat some humble pie. For those who don't know, I interview a different author on my blog every Thursday. Today is Christine Columbus' turn BUT I forgot to post the blog before I left for my day job. My humble apologies to Christine. It will be posted later tonight, so if you get a chance, please stop by and leave a comment for Christine on my blog. She's a great author and a very fun personality. I enjoyed interviewing her. And for those who might have missed it, I interviewed KyAnn Waters last Thursday. What fun that was!

Why I wrote Coming Home

All my life I had a driving urge to write. I was always making up stories in my head, and writing plays with my best friend that we acted out in our yards. As I grew older I founhd myself in a number of careers that usilized my creativity and writing skills. And when I finally had the chance to write, the genre I chose was romance, because aboe all else, I believe in happy endings. In 1988 I was baptized and since then my faith has been a very strong part of my life. Although I write other sontemporaries under other names, I wanted to write a story that my grown children could enjoy and relate to. I think in Coming Home I've done it. I hope you'll read Jake and Jenna's story and follow her on her journey back to her faith.

Dreams Do Come True

Hi All...I guess I'm the "new kid" on the block...but not new to writing. I've been writing short stories and poems for over 25 years, and October of 2006 my first paranomal romantic suspense, entitled COMA COAST was released. It's sequel, THE VANITY is set to debut August, 2007. To read an excerpt and for purchasing a copy info log on to my personal site at: www.robertadecaprio.com.
I'm a classic example of the phrase "if you work hard enough, your dreams do come true." In 1950 I was born with mild Cerebral Palsey. Then, medical treatments and technology were not what they are today. When my parents sought the doctor's advise on how to help me, they were told to institutionalize me, because I'd never be productive in the community, and to go on and have other children. I am grateful my parents didn't listen, and trusted in the Lord instead. As a Christian I walk to this day with God, using my canes and a wheelchair...and I think of how that doctor could have ruined my life....how many others did he?
I'd like to find him and say..."You said I wouldn't be productive...huh! I have an education, I drive, I'm married...a mother & grandmother, I own my own home, I work, and I'm a published author."
Dreams do come true if you believe them in your heart and work diligently. You can't let others call the shots for your life. Never give up the faith.
The Wild Rose Press has just accepted my romantic fantasy, entitled A RIVER OF ORANGE (no release date yet), and I'm working on several other projects, as well as being an Assistant Editor for INDEPENDENCE TODAY newspaper (a national publication dedicated to the needs & rights of the disabled). If there is anything I am aware of, its the daily struggles phyiscally challenged individuals face.
As a former Chaplain's Aide for a local rehab center, I'd tell those recently disabled with spinal cord injuries and MS, that the circumstances in their lives may have changed, but the quality of their lives hasn't. Life is what you make it. My grandmother always said: "When life deals you a bunch of lemons, make lemonade." I've made tons of lemonade and will continue to make more, I'm sure. What I've lived through has molded me to be who I am today, and able (with the grace of God), to see dreams do come true.
To all of you who are struggling with something in your life, take heart today. If you give up, you also give up any chance you have of achieving your goals. Hang in there...remember it's not over until you take your last breath...and then it's just doing things in another dimension.
Sincerely,
Roberta C.M. DeCaprio

A Five Angel Review for Words

I had to share this:

In Words Ms. Odell takes us into the world of a newlywed couple. The man is the first to open his thoughts to us and express his feelings for the woman who has captured his heart and placed the precious gold band upon his hand. Then we get to watch the scene play out in the woman’s perspective. As we watch this scene unfold the love between these two is especially visible. There are definite flames between this loving couple. It is unique to feel like you are right there in the house with them, but that is just how you feel while reading this short story.

The words of Ms. Odell fly off the page and into our minds while this scene plays out. It is quite different to read about a newly married couple and how their feelings, although not necessarily expressed with words, show through their slight actions. It was nice to see a blushing male for once instead of a female. Although it is a short story, readers will not be disappointed with this sweet romantic episode. Words gives us a refreshing look at how love can be expressed not only with words but actions.

Wintertime Blues

Well, it’s finally winter here in Michigan. Living in the suburbs, that means whitish-gray snow, lots of slush, and more salt than the Utah desert. And let’s not even mention cold and flu season. Anyone with kids in school, (right up thru high school) knows that game. It is, however, the perfect time to curl up with a good book, right?

One of the downsides of finally becoming a published author is that I now have much less time to feed my own addiction---er---I mean read. I miss it! I’m firmly convinced that one of the best ways to beat the winter doldrums is by getting lost in a book set somewhere warm, whether that’s a distant planet or a glittering Regency ballroom.

On the upside, though, I’ve discovered a whole world of on-line friends, wonderful readers and fellow authors whose notes give me a smile all day long as I type. So I raise my mug of tea to all of you! Because friends, whether face to face, or on the other side of the world, are even better than books.

Keep warm!

Part of the Rose Garden

Hi everyone,

I am a new author in the garden of Wild Rose Press. It is a thrill to have a book under the Champagne Rose group. The name alone makes me think of white lace on the trim of a pillow meant for two, twelve red roses in a vase, chilled champagne by the fireplace, and a sweet chocolate truffle being fed to me by a hot sexy lover. Now, that’s a story that every woman looking for romance can enjoy.

The excitement of joining this group has made me look at the other beautiful roses in my life. What did Mac Davis say in his song? "You got to stop and smell the Roses." You can’t help but heed his advice occasionally. I am blessed with a great husband, wonderful kids, and a great group of family and friends that have believed in me. Their love and support blooms in my life everyday.

My passion is writing, the soft velvet petals of a rose. The thorns are the rejections, which have spurred me to be a better writer. My dream is to inspire my reader’s hearts with compassion and love.

I am very happy to be a part of the Wild Rose Press’ garden of writers.

Is there anybody out there?

Do you ever get the feeling you're talking to yourself?

You blog your best or participate in an author chat/Wild Rose Press Promo. After letting your fingers fly across the keyboard, you wait for a response.

Just like in those old B-movies, it's much too quiet out there. Except for a couple of words from another WRP author or one of the handful of loyal readers who comment, there's nothing but the vast silence of Cyberspace.

Is there anybody out there?

OOPS

oops! I didn't mean to post twice. The last post was meant for another blog. Hope you don't mind learning more about me.... Maggie

Introducing -- Maggie Toussaint

Hello World! Maven Maggie Toussaint checking in and introducing herself. Our head maven has tasked us to tell three facts about ourself and being a writer doesn't count.

1. I grew up eating seafood for breakfast. My dad would cook dishes like brown oyster stew, squid, fish, crabcakes, whatever was on hand. He got up early, regardless of whether he was going fishing or not, and I often got up with him to hang out in the kitchen.

2. Which brings me to my next fact. I learned to drink coffee at a very young age. As I grew, though I had medical reasons to avoid caffeine, so now I say I got my lifetime dose early. After The Change, I could drink caffeine again, but now I like tea instead.

3. Bread is one of my favorite foods. But its restricted on The South Beach Diet, so I seem to be jonesing for bread these days.

Here's an unrelated trivia fact: in the South, macaroni and cheese counts as a vegetable. Weird but true.

Have a great week! Check in next Monday for more from Maggie

Bloggin, bloggin, bloggin

The world is an ever evolving place. Kids today don't know how to use a tv without a remote. They wouldn't dream of going on a trip without a stash of DVDs to watch in the car. And the internet phenomenon is incredible. Each iteration brings more connection to people across the miles and around the world.

Okay, I know I'm showing my age, but truly, did anyone here really know what a blog was a few years ago? Now we're all out here, bloggin. Nothing better than sitting in the comfort of your own home in your favorite unpresentable clothes and telling your deepest darkest secrets.

So what does this have to do with publishing? Are you going to get to the point, Maggie? Yeah, I have a point, somewhere.

Publishing isn't all about mortar and pages anymore. Its a virtual wildfire, and places like TWRP are giving people what they want - great stories at affordable prices. Its like having a candy machine in your living room.

Don't be afraid to try new things. E-books are HOT!

I Ate My Contest Prize:)

Yes, you read that right - I ate my contest prize. If you go to my website www.julesbennett.com you'll see where I put up a nice box of chocolates for this month's contest. I went out the other day with my hubby (first mistake). We picked out a really nice box of chocolates and brought them home.

The contest doesn't end until February 8th, but I went ahead and bought the box anyway (my second mistake).

The other day hubby and I were dying for something sweet. We searched every cabinet, the fridge, the freezer...nothing. Oh, but wait, look over there on the island in the kitchen...A BEAUTIFUL BOX OF WHITMAN'S CHOCOLATES!!

I swear the Hallelujah chorus erputed from the angels as a light stream came down from the heavens. We didn't say a word as we tore into the box and devoured nearly half.

Ahhhh...it was so good:) I think I'll wait until I pick a winner on the 8th, then buy a box of chocolates on my way to the post office to mail it:)

Guess I should jump on the bandwagon!

Well hello everyone! Yes I've signed with Wild Rose Press for my first two novels. Shadow of the Wolf (book 1 of my Wolf/Raven series) and Scottish Whispers. Both are coming soon from the Faery Rose Line. I'm truly excited to be part of such a wonderful company. These people have been a wealth of knowledge and support that I couldn't have asked for more.

I'm looking forward to having many more novels available through WRP in the near future. So much writing to do and so little time. Good thing the characters in my mind keep me busy.

Please feel free to check out my work at WRP website or via

www.robynwren.com

Again, its wonderful to be part of the Garden!

TGIF

The Wild Rose Press authors bloom in almost as many varieties as the romances we write.

Some juggle writing with 9-5 jobs, family, and other responsibilities. Others are "full-time" authors (whenever we're not juggling family and other responsibilities.)

None of us know the meaning of TGIF (unless of course there's a new WRP release scheduled to debut on Friday!)

The work week never ends for us. No matter what the day of the week, we'll be working on first drafts, moving forward on works in progress, proofing galleys, and exchanging e-mails with editors!

My New WRP Release

Hi!
I'm excited that my new release, "Romancing the Geek" is now on sale at TWRP Bookstore. It was a whirlwind process, going from contract offer to galleys in a week, but the folks at WRP are great about moving things along. I also had a chance to work with Lori for the first time.

Here's a blurb:

Stephanie's lifelong dream is to design toys—sweet, cuddly toys. Instead, she's hired as a glorified typist. And not even with the rest of the marketing department, but way downstairs in the only available office, which she has to share with Brad, who's a total geek. A geek who's happy programming computer games full of explosions.

They agree to ignore each other while Stephanie waits for a desk to open upstairs. But when Brad has girlfriend troubles—like he can't get Lianne, the cocktail waitress to notice him—he swallows his pride and asks Stephanie if she'll teach him how to talk to women. She agrees, but he's having trouble passing her exams.

Gez, Jules, I thought I was the only one that laid awake half the night thinking about her writing!!!! Sometimes it's a song or family problem keeping me awake, but more often it's my writing. I've been without a full night's sleep so long that I wonder if such a thing even exists.

Character Interaction

Now that I've finished one manuscript and started on two others, my new characters are waking me in my sleep. I'm glad the story line is flowing through my head so well, but come on...I'M SLEEPING!

This happens every time I start a new project. This is a good problem to have and I've noticed I write more emotional, memorable scenes when I'm sleep deprived.

More often than not I dream of the whole book and, of course, I'm in the staring role:) That's kind of cool, but one of these days I NEED SOME SLEEP!

I can't wait to see what comes out of this new group of dreams. Stay tuned...
Sorry about the double post. A screen came on saying my first attempt didn't post.

I've never blogged before....

Truly. I've put it off for as long as I could but now that I'm here, I think it's going to require a LOT of chocolate...maybe I should just close my eyes and type.

I'm going to start with a special thank you to The Wild Rose Press for the contract offer. I'm very excited about working with Katherine and TWRP. I love the user-friendly website, packed with information for readers & writers. But what is truly wonderful...they care about their authors and their books.

I'm new to TWRP, but have been writing for over ten years. I've had the pleasure of creating characters that I love, even though not all of them will be published, and have had two of my western historical romances published. I also published two short stories and three short stories in e-zine format.

Over the years, I've learned that trying to find the right home for your work can be a daunting task. Frustration and doubt can damage your writer's heart. But if your heart is in your story, then have faith, the right editor and right publisher is out there waiting for you to find them.

NEVER GIVE UP! Besides, if you try, the voices will only make you appear quite insane to those that do not have the gift of imagination and ability to hear their characters arguing (ahem...talking) in their heads.

Well, I've said too much already.
Keep writing!

House of Lies to be released on Jan. 12

Hey everyone,

I'm very excited about the electronic debut of my romantic suspense, House of Lies, on January 12. I'm still learning the marketing ropes, but expect to see excerpts about this yoga loving bird watcher and this busted up CIA agent as they sift through the lies of the past and tangle with a trained assasin!

Stay tuned, and tell all your friends!

Maggie Toussaint

New Kid on the Block

Well, here I am! I've signed with The Wild Rose Press and I can't wait to get started on a promising writing career with them. The enthusiasm and support this group provides will be will no doubt boost my spirits when the writer's block kicks in:)

My Sweetheart Rose single-title, Home Again, should be out in print this spring. I can hardly wait! The fan base I've already established overwhelms me and I only hope they enjoy my characters as much as I do.

It's somewhat hectic working on other manuscripts, promoting yourself, and worrying about the edits that will be coming soon. After four years of dreaming of becoming published, this is a nice problem to have:)

DOUBLE DEBUT!!

Hi there everyone! I wanted to breeze by and annouce my double debut at The Wild Rose Press! I write romance for Mills & Boon, but love the challenge of a short story. I am so thankful WRP celebrates the medium, giving those of us pressed for time a smile and a bounce to our step.

The love after loss story, How About Tomorrow, is the first Rosette I contracted with WRP. My writing friends at Romance Divas helped me tweak it until it was just right...and then Leeane fixed that to perfection.

Jack hasn’t been out on a date since his wife’s death five years ago. Even his teenage daughter thinks it’s time he finally go on a blind date brokered by his sister-in-law. Jack’s unsure, until he meets Maria. She’s as timid as he is at first, but the more they talk the more they realize they should see each other again, and again.

My English Tea Rose, In Silhouette, was so exciting to write. I work mainly in contemporary romance, so stretching into Regency was difficult, but rewarding! I dedicated this story to my critique partner, American Title II finalist Suzan Hyssen. She writes intelligent, comedic Regency romances, when she is not busy with law school.

James Darby is bored by the ennui of country life, fervidly anticipating his return to London. When he spies Miss Hughes entertaining herself by cutting silhouettes at a party he’s captivated by her talent, and charm. How can someone so fascinating survive in a place so tedious?

In February, another of my stories will appear in the Dreams & Desires charity anthology. Keep a look out for my Last Rose of Summer Rosettes...they are coming soon!

Run away with the circus!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Now I know that truth is indeed zanier than fiction. My book, Pi and the Fabulosa (slightly married) Twenty Four Hour Man is in print, available now through Amazon.com. Below is an excerpt and info on a fun new contest to win a basket of goodies. Tootles. Dana
www.danamentink.com

The Excerpt:

My name is Pi, like pineapple. I wasn’t named after the tropical fruit or any of the Boston crème filled varieties but rather for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
My mother was a math professor sprinkled in and amongst her other career as a cocaine addict. It’s a good thing she never had the son she wanted. Hypotenuse would be a hard name to live with.
Bernie was correct, of course. Even as I patted his bald head I knew something was most definitely not right. A whisper of fear circled in my stomach like the fog that swirled above my head. What was going on here? The current string of difficulties was more than coincidence. If I didn’t figure it out soon, I had the uneasy feeling that something bad was going to happen.
Very bad.

The contest: If you ran away with the circus, what would your job be? Drop me an e-mail with “circus” in the subject line. Tell me what circus job would be a fit for you and why. I’ll enter you in a drawing to win a basket full of circus themed goodies. www.danamentink.com

How to Save on Christmas Postage

Postage at Christmas time should be calculated into the household budget for December. Between Christmas Cards and boxing up presents to send...whoa, it definitely adds up!

I've got a little help...call it a little inspiration one of Santa's elves whispered into my ear.

Save a bit of postage and, at the same time, send a unique gift to those far away...a gift of reading.

E-books are a fabulous gift to send to those you love. It's something they can enjoy and save to read again and again. They won't gather dust on shelves and picking a special story that means something to your loved one makes them feel special. Every time they read it, they'll think of you.

The Wild Rose Press carries a variety of wonderful romance e-books sure to make anyone's Christmas merry.

Oh, and I just happen to have a suggestion if you are looking for something fun to send...

Time for a Christmas Story!

Excerpt: "Not Your Momma's Reindeer Games" from TRUE TALES OF CHRISTMAS TOWN

Each year, Santa Claus grants each of his children their own special wish for Christmas. In this scene, Noel, who wants to be called Leon and be # 1 on the Naughty List, is playing poker with some of his buddies. His sister, Christmas Spirit known to the family as Krista, has invaded the all male game to try to talk him into using his Christmas wish for peace on earth, rather than the more selfish wish of the new motorcycle he’s decided he wants.

“But, Noel, please think about it. If we all wish for peace on Earth this Christmas, maybe Father will have enough magic to make it happen.”

Leon set his cigar down and grabbed the trash can. The retching noises he made echoed in the small room.

“Gross.”

“Damn, if I wanted to hear that, I would have stayed home tonight.”

“Does this mean the game is over?”

“Oh, Noel, I hope you’re not coming down with the flu like so many in Christmas Town.”

Krista’s sweet sympathy almost made his stomach turn for real.

“Nope, just your give whirled peas a chance made me sick to my stomach.” He thrust the wastebasket with nothing in it but a couple of beer cans under her face.

She jumped back, then peered inside. She lifted her head and, for a second, Leon saw a flare of anger on his normally unflappable, always sweet sister’s face. Then her smile reappeared and her partially closed fist eased into a pat on his shoulder.

“Your jokes are awful, Noel.” Her laughter pealed like bells.

“Go away, Krista,” Leon repeated. “We’re got a game to concentrate on.”

“Alright, but at least promise me you’ll think about using your Christmas wish to help someone else.”

“Bet,” the dealer said.

“Call.”

“Call”

“Bet’s to you, Leon.”

“Fine, Krista. I promise. Now will you leave?” Leon shoved a pile of chips into the pot. “Raise.”

Christmas Spirit leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Have a good game. Oh, gee, Noel, you’ve got nothing but pretty hearts in your hand.”

“Fold, fold, fold,” echoed around the table from the other players while Krista gently shut the door behind her.

Hi all. It's a bit of Mistletoe Madness available today! Here's a quick blurb to entertain you as you stuff that turkey and mash those potatoes! At the end of the story, there's a recipe to use for your holiday celebrations. Cheers! Dana

Proclamations and a hello!

Hi all, this is my first blog on The Wild Rose Press Blog and I'm pleased to be here. I've recently contracted with TWRP for a few short stories. The first to be released is called Proclamations and it'll be available for purchase on Friday, November 10th. It's an American Rose, the story of love amidst the turmoil of the Civil War. A blurb? Oh, sure, I just happen to have a blurb. I'm so glad someone asked! Here goes, a blurb: The War Between the States has been raging for two long years. In Virginia in 1863 Jolene Crane misses her fiancée, Nate, more than words can say. Every moment that she’s not busy taking care of household chores or working at the hospital, she’s consumed by her longing for the man who holds her heart.
When Abraham Lincoln signs a proclamation declaring the fourth Thursday in November a day to be celebrated joyfully and thankfully, Jolene is determined not to celebrate the day. After all, what has she got to be thankful for? And the only proclamations that come to mind have all to do with the losses they’ve suffered and little to do with celebrating.
But when a new wave of soldiers arrives at the hospital on the day before the holiday, Jolene just may find that she does, in fact, have something to celebrate. A cover? Oh, sure, I've got a swell cover, courtesy of RJ! Would you like to see it? Sure, hang on a sec... there you go, that's the cover, up at the top. Isn't it beautiful? So there you have it, my first Wild Rose Press release, available in a few days. And my first TWRP blog, available now. :-) Thanks for letting me chat with you--I hope to do plenty more of it in the future.

Hello from Betsy!

Hello out there! I just read Maggie's post, and I too am a "newbie"! But I'm very excited to join "the garden", as my editor described it. This seems like a great company and I'm an honor to be a part of the author membership. My romantic suspense is due out next year, I'm in the editing stage now, and beyond excited. This is all so much fun, and such a blessing. I hope to get to meet more of my fellow authors very soon!

Anyone hungry?

It's getting cooler -- far from chilly here in central Florida, but the a/c isn't running as much, and the humidity levels are down. Time to think about getting back into the kitchen.

All my characters seem to enjoy cooking or eating (and who doesn't like one or the other?). Because the holidays are here, I'm having a contest about food!

Stop by my website and enter my November contest for some favorite family recipes.

And stop by the Wild Rose Press bookstore to check out my 3 releases: Words, Out of Sight, & Relationships.

Hello from Maggie Toussaint

I'm new to The Wild Rose Press, so new I don't know the first thing about my book coming out! I know I wrote it (& rewrote it), but that's about it. It's due for a new title and an editor comb-through. I'm excited to be here, very excited that my romantic suspense will be in readers' hands before too much longer. Heck I'm just plain old excited! And I want to tell you a bit more about myself.

Are you a fan of Daylight Savings Time? I'm not. Twice a year I have to reset my biological clock, as well as all the house clocks and the car clock. I never know when to eat, so my brain sends out the signal to eat at every opportunity - not a good message to send out to someone who loves chocolate as much as I do. I'm worried that my negative attitude towards the time change shows that I'm morphing into - my Grandmother.

Another thing that's been on my mind of late is taking care of elderly adults. It seems that there is a fine line between overstepping your bounds and minding your own business. I have a mind that likes to take apart puzzles, but this isn't always a good thing when the puzzle is a relative's life, a relative who is hanging onto his/her dignity by a slim spider web. I hope for courage to know when to step in and when to keep my mouth shut.

I'm not a very good housekeeper. In fact, house work always falls to the bottom of my to-do list. If there are any tasks that aren't related to dusting, vacuuming, cleaning, etc, they tend to get done first. I also have an aversion to bugs being in my house. I like them outside just fine, but when they come inside my house, this means war! I'm a great bug squisher.

Okay. Enough odd facts about me. Hopefully I'll have some real book news soon to post.

Maggie Toussaint

I Have a Cover!

I'm Excited!
It's always so energizing to see my covers. Makes me feel legitimate as a writer and gives me tremendous satisfaction for my work. I was pleased to find out this story, Cinderella Tannenbaum, will be released in mid-November.
I've always loved the month or so before the holidays crank up into full swing and the stores play worn-out Christmas music while shoppers grab scary masks and candy corn off the shelves. One thing to remember - Candy corn is a vegetable. Keep telling yourself that and you won't feel nearly as bad when you shove a handful into your mouth!

Stress, Thy Name is Woman!

Why do women think we can do it all? And when we have a hard time getting it all perfect, what's the result? STRESS! I think I've set myself up in this position where I have to be the one who reminds everyone of what they have to do: Do your homework, brush your teeth, take out the trash, and a million other commands. I think I need a Mommy telling me what to tell them sometimes! Right now I'm juggling plans for my daughter's upcoming Bat Mitzvah, a houseful of out of town guests, ordering food for the parties, family events, getting my own family outfitted. Aside from all the peripheral things that go with that event, I'm sucking in a deep breath and plunging into the role of President of my local Romance Writers chapter. Then I have to fit in a part-time job, all my writing/critiquing responsibilities and plan for an out of town trip to help my parents move a week after the Bat Mitzvah! Oh, yeah - then there's the holiday shopping I've yet to start. No wonder my heart's beating a mile a minute.
The bright spot right now is going to be the time I spend with friends and family. And the writing gives me lots of pleasure. I've just sold another short story to The Wild Rose Press - a holiday piece titled, Cinderella Tannenbaum. I know I'll come through this super-busy time a stronger person with a few more gray hairs. No problem - I'm still at the plucking stage with them!

Just Released Yesterday...

I'm so excited about this Halloween story because it was such fun to write. It's a sweet romance with two strongly opinionated characters. But sometimes opposites attract...
If you like to smile and you love romance popping up where you least expect it, I think you'll enjoy reading this one.
Thanks to RJ for the perfect cover, and to Leanne for her wonderful editing guidance.
