My story, Angel of My Dreams, is part of an American Civil War romance anthology, Northern Roses and Southern Belles, coming July31st to The Wild Rose Press, along with authors Caroline Clemmens, Isabel Roman, Jeanmarie Hamilton, Jennifer Ross and Mary Ann Webber.
And if you leave a comment on my blog today, you’ll be entered in a drawing to win a copy!
In a country torn asunder--from the Canadian border to Texas, from Maryland to Arkansas, from the battlefield of Antietam to the Red River Campaign, brave men and loyal women see their lives turned upside down.
Peril lurks behind every tree and near every homestead, but the hard-fought love of a man and a woman surpasses all.
Six talented writers provide stories of romance and danger centering on Union and Confederate soldiers, spies, blockade runners, renegades, and battlefield nurses during a period of corsets, hoopskirts and gentlemen callers.
To give you a taste of the stories in this anthology, here's the blurb and a short excerpt from my story, Angel of My Dreams.
Civil War reenactor, Kyle Dalton, keeps seeing a beautiful woman on the battlefield tending to soldiers, he thinks she's another reenactor. But when she disappears into thin air, he starts to believe he's seen a ghost. Did he have a past life with this woman?
Exceprt:
"Where am I?"
"Shh." She placed a finger on his lips. The scent of lavender invaded his senses.
He frowned when he realized he was lying on a cot wearing his reenactor clothing. Had he dreamed he’d come home?
"The doctor says you'll be fine. He dug out the bullet and stitched up your leg."
"My leg?" Kyle reached down. His pant's leg had been cut apart at the seam. Heavy bandages wrapped around his thigh."This doesn't make any sense. I twisted my ankle. It's fine now."
She took his hand and stroked his forehead. Her touch sent warmth and desire through his body.
"I have to know..." He swallowed. "...your name."
She smiled. "You haven't forgotten me already?"
"I...you never told me."
"Of course I did." She leaned away.
He held tightly to her hand, fearing she'd leave again."Don't go."
Her hand dissolved. He couldn't hold her.

Yes, Professor earns a top 5 book rating at LASR, praise at Seriously Reviewed!
I'm beside myself with back to back great reviews!
A top 5 book rating for Yes, Professor at The Long and Short of It Reviews!
Wild plum has this to say about Yes, Professor:
"Wow! This story was well-crafted, well-thought out and the characters seemed so real to me. The scenes were so vivid and so hot that they steamed off the pages. The details of the plot seemed so accurate to me for the time frame. I love when a writer is unpredictable, Ms. Anne was unpredictable with several of her scenes in Yes, Professor. It’s a great book to read while on vacation at the beach or just sitting at home after a day of work. It will take you to another world with people you sincerely feel like you know and want to see happy and care about. The passion and heat is quick, but believable between the characters, it doesn’t seem forced or unwanted or like the author is trying. It will open doors to fantasies you never thought you had. Tori Anne is a new author for me and I’m happy I discovered her and her wonderful writing talents. I’m adding her to my list of authors I must watch out for and her books…my oh my, I cannot wait to read more books from this author. Every romance fan should add this quick read to their list."
Thanks Wild Plum and LASR!
And THEN a delightful review at SERIOUSLY REVIEWED:
Review:
"Yes, Professor. Oh yes, Professor! Oh Yes! YES! YES!!! Okay, so you can see Yes, Professor is a titillating short story. This book comes with a hot rating—as it should.Patience is instantly attracted to the handsome Professor Richmond. He presents her with an opportunity to work at a new school for girls, she embraces the chance and spends the next two years fantasizing about him. When she discovers his naughty tastes run similar to hers, she decides to take matters into her own hands (or fingers as she’d been apt to do in the story in a very erotic way).I loved this story. I loved that Patience is curious but also adventurous. Professor Richmond has met his match; he just doesn’t know it yet. A naughty nibble to satisfy your craving for something forbidden."
Thanks Seriously Reviewed!

Cheers!

Rating: HOT - American Rose Novella
Here's a tease:
"Miss Winters," a stern voice tore Patience away from the reminiscence of two years past and she went crashing into the reality of Headmaster Richmond's sharp, eviscerating gaze.
Two years had passed. Two years in the same lavishly appointed office with a man that maddened her every thought and sensibility.
Two years of yearning and dreaming and trying to say only proper things.
How on earth had she withstood it? She had no idea.
But she was leaving tomorrow and she had to find a way to stay.
"Ms. Winters," the Professor called again across the room, his intoxicating voice drawing her back into the present moment, two torturous years since.
"Yes, Professor," she replied softly.

And it only gets HOTTER from there...

Reviews for 'It Happened One Summer'
"This is a comforting book, and I sensed that from the first page. Reading it is like curling up in a window seat on a cold gloomy day, with a fire crackling on the hearth, and a good book in your lap! The reader just instinctively knows that there will be a happily-ever-after conclusion, and instinctively that propels one forward through the book, with trust and optimism. Top recommendations for this one, and I anticipate future stories from this wonderful author!"
Reviewer: Annie Euro-Reviews 5 star excellent!
"Ms. Rees instills characters that leave a lasting impression with wonderful dialogue that enhances the story. The secondary characters are a welcome addition to the storyline. Ms. Rees knows how to hook the reader and fascinate in this compelling page-turner. It Happened One Summer is a phenomenal read that should not be missed."
~ The Romance Studio 5 hearts ~
"Ms. Rees fashions a tender romance with quick conversation that keeps everything flowing smoothly. The secondary characters are well-rounded and lend dimension to the story. She weaves a compelling story mixed with jealously, greed and betrayal that grabs the reader. This most refreshing read makes one feel good all the way down to the toes. This is one book that is truly a recommended read."

Release Day for Erin's Rebel!!
My debut romance, Erin's Rebel, hits the e-book shelves today. And in honor of American Rose month over at The Wild Rose Press, it will be discounted until the end of this month.
Blurb: Philadelphia newspaper reporter, Erin Branigan, is engaged to marry an up-and-coming lawyer, but dreams of a man from the past change those plans and start her on a journey beyond time. After a car accident, Erin wakes to find herself living in the 1860s in a Confederate army camp.
Captain Will Montgomery, the man of her dreams, is now a flesh and blood Rebel soldier who sets her soul aflame. But the Irish beauty holds a secret he needs to unravel before he can place his trust in her.
Can she correct a mistake made long ago that caused his death and denied her the love she was meant to have? Or is she doomed to live out her life with nothing but regret?
Excerpt: She gazed up into his dark eyes. Up close they were a deep, chocolate brown. He was so damned attractive in that uniform. Clearing her throat, she found her voice. "I appreciate what you did, Captain. That man's been harassing me."
"I suspected as much. Wagner doesn't seem to know how to be respectful to a woman."
She had trouble finding the words to reply. The aroma of sandalwood and his unique masculine scent that had floored her when he'd carried her into Doc’s tent left her flabbergasted.
"I'd warned Wagner to stay away from you," he said.
"He was so drunk, I don't think any warning would have stopped him."
"He didn't hurt you--"
She shook her head, noting the concern in his eyes. "All I could think to do was get out of the tent."
"That was wise, ma'am."
She glanced at the bundle he still held. "Are those for me?"
He grinned. "If you don't mind, ma'am. I have two shirts that need washing."
"My pleasure." When he handed her the clothes, their hands briefly touched. Electricity shot through her. She caught his gaze.
His eyes widened. He swallowed and backed away a few steps, then tipped his cap. "Ma'am." He turned away.
She watched him cross the camp and disappear from sight. If a reason existed for her coming to this time period, it had to be Will Montgomery. But why had this happened? Would she ever go back to her old life, or was she stuck here forever?
Although she'd tried to hold her emotions in check, the tension that had been building for the last few days caused her eyes to burn at the prospect. A sob built at the back of her throat. She dropped the clothing she’d been sorting in the basket and scurried into the privacy of her tent.

Two Wild and Crazy Roses!
This past weekend I was privileged to be signing with a brand new rose, Violet Rightmire, at Borders in Jacksonville, Florida. It's been a few years since my first release, a TWRP title, came out, so I was feeling like an old hand. Violet had a few qualms but I'm here to report that she did well on her first time out. I'll bet she even tries it again. Here's a picture of the two of us. Violet is on the left, Maggie is on the right.

Patience Winters’ world is about to turn upside down. After two years as personal assistant to the stern and striking Professor Richmond at the Women’s Academy, her term is about to end. Achingly in love with him, Patience longs for the professor to give her a reason to stay. Desperate for some hint he might feel the same way, Patience steals a peek at her mentor’s secret journal and discovers his scandalous fantasies. But how can she let the professor know she’s in on his secret? Her typical breathless "yes, Professor" has never meant so much.
From Brynna:
"After ending her education at the orphanage, Patience Winters is offered a chance to further her schooling as assistant to the delicious Professor Devon Richmond. At the end of her two year term, she desperately wants to stay as more than his aide, but does he want her in more ways than one? A late night trip to his office to read his secret diary offers more answers than she bargained for. Will she answer "Yes, Professor" to his unvoiced desires?
Scorching, steamy and strangely laugh out loud funny at times, "Yes, Professor" is a quick, hot read that will leave you wanting more. I won't ruin it for you and give away the ending, but does Patience finally get her naughty professor? You gotta read it for yourself!"

Release Date for EARTH Announced!
The official release date for my first book, EARTH, has been set at April 23, 2010 - appropriately enough, the day after Earth Day! I'm thrilled, and I'll be holding some exciting giveaways following the book's release. EARTH is Book One of The Elemental Series, and Kincade and Allyson can't wait to share their story. For now, here's a little taste:
EARTH - by Nicki Greenwood
Once a powerful Earth Elemental, KINCADE MURPHY is about to lose his failing ranch. When he's forced to accept the help of botanist ALLYSON HAMILTON, he's determined to keep his distance. But a discovered plot to force him off his land convinces him he must keep her close to protect her ... no matter how hard she is to resist.
EXCERPT
Kincade swept a hand at the barren ground of the trail. "This look like a good enough spot to stop for more soil samples?"
"Sure," Ally answered, dragging her gaze away from him with a pang of regret.
They slipped from their horses together. Cade led his mount to the edge of the worn dirt trail and tied its reins to a sturdy branch. He turned back to take her horse's reins as she led the animal closer. The motion brought him up short just inches away.
His body went rigid as stone. Time stopped and held its breath with her.
The warmth in her face could have been the sun. The tingle on her skin might have been the light breeze lifting her hair. But only the green, green depths of his eyes caused such a quivering in her belly. Standing mere inches away, he studied her like some ancient mystery.
If she had to go by his eyes alone, she couldn't have said how old he was--but it might have been centuries.
He loomed close enough for his body heat to draw a sharp contrast to the cool mountain air. His gaze dropped to her mouth. She heard the soft hiss of his indrawn breath, and he took half a step closer. Her heartbeat doubled speed. "We shouldn't do this," he murmured.
For once in her life, she didn't care what she should or shouldn't do. Everything ceased to exist but the phantom heat emanating from him. Something in her whispered that she'd never get this chance again. She took a breath to slow her pounding heart and closed the distance between their bodies. "What if I want to?"
A haunted look flashed across his face. Faint lines formed between his brows. "I shouldn't, Ally."
Disappointment speared her. Unwilling to let him see how much his refusal hurt, she turned away.
His warm, rough hand slipped into hers. Surprised, she turned back.
He stepped closer and rooted her to the spot with a heated stare. "I didn't say I didn't want to."

1st Review for 'Children Of The Mist'
I was really nervous about my first 'official' review for my second book, 'Children Of The Mist', a sequel to 'Starquest', (the first one is always such an 'unknown quantity' ) but the reviewer gave it a 'You Need To Read' rating and had some lovely things to say about it. Including the following:
"The story is fast paced and filled with interesting action: traveling some beautiful but difficult terrains, facing a deadly virus, and battling evil alien slavers. The psychic powers add an exciting dimension and are an integral part of the plot and romance. The story jumps into action from the very beginning and keeps you engaged to the end!"
Thank you so much, Martha E.

John opened the door, and it was her. All the feelings he’d been having for the past few days rushed at him, enveloped him, and punched him right square in the gut, and then delved lower. The heat dipped and his blood pumped, faster, hotter. All he could do was stare at her like a love-sick puppy. She stood there, looking uncertain, and vulnerable. Her beautiful long, red hair waved slightly with the breeze, the gusts of wind blowing through it, swirling it around her upper body, making her look angelic, or devilish maybe. She stared back at him, bit her lip, and then spoke, quietly, anxiously, “I hate to bother you, but…I…I…oh, never mind. I’m sorry I bothered you.”
She started to turn away, but John stepped the rest of the way out of his door and stopped her with his hand on her arm. “No, please, wait. What can I help you with?”
A bolt of lightening shot straight through him and his system spiraled nearly out of control. He saw her shiver, and he touched her, bare skin to bare skin, at her wrist, wrapping his fingers around her pounding pulse point. Electric shock vibrated between their bodies. The power surged through him and jolted him. The smart thing to do would be to remove his hand and break the all-encompassing contact, immediately if not sooner. Right then, he didn’t feel very smart. He wasn’t even thinking. He just wanted to touch her. He’d been wanting to for days.
Blurb:
Sherri’s heart is a frozen block of ice after what her spouse has done to her. She needs a place of rest, a safe haven, away from the long armed reach of her soon-to-be-ex- husband. He abused her, and she escaped. Now he wants her back, and he’s stalking her, threatening her, promising she’ll not live if she doesn’t return to him. He’s wealthy and powerful, and he’ll accept no betrayal from someone who thinks she can leave him unscathed. She changes her identity and goes in search of a new home, and a brighter future. She finds one, in a rental unit owned by John.
John is a fireman. He’s seen people in Sherri’s position before. He despises men who abuse women. He lost a woman to just such a man. He’ll not let anyone hurt Sherri. She’s too beautiful, and he’s falling too hard, too fast. He vows to protect her to the end.

Rumors
I heard a rumor a while back that disturbed me. Someone told me that big authors like Nora Roberts don't have to write anymore. They simply come up with an outline for a story and someone else writes it.
I guess I don't believe that rumor. I can't think of anything worse than having someone else write my story idea. After writing hundreds of books I think I'd still feel the same way.
If it was true, why be a writer?
Writers that are disciplined and write two or three books a year, or more, have always impressed and inspired me.
So I don't believe it. These men and women are dedicated, disciplined, and have mastered their craft.

Contest
Happy July 4th for tomorrow, to my American friends!
Of course we don't celebrate it over here - well, actually we do. In recent years we've decided to join in the fun and there are little local celebrations going on in various parts of the country. In my own village there's going to be an 'American themed' day tomorrow to celebrate, so i'm looking forward to that. Anyway, I've decided to extend the date of my 'Children Of The Mist' contest until Midnight July 4th. Here are the details.
Tamarith, the heroine of 'Children Of The Mist' loves flowers and butterflies (Yes, even in the cold air of Niflheim there are butterflies) I happen to know she has a pretty and colourful butterfly garland hanging over the window of her favourite room - and you could win one just like it, to hang in a conservatory, garden room or a bedroom to enjoy the wonder of the natural world even when you are inside.
