Preliminary Galley for "Someone to Trust" completed

I just finished the preliminary galley for my Inspirational Romance, SOMEONE TO TRUST. Although we yet have another galley to do, I feel such a sense of accomplishment. With the help of a great editor I've seen the story take depth and become complete. While reading the preliminary galley, I'd think, "Wow, did I actually write that?" And though, it certainly may not be the art of some of my favorite authors, It's something I can be proud of. What began as just an idea has actually turned into a novel with real characters who have real problems.

What a long process it's been. But just seeing the cover has made it totally worth it.

I've been writing since age 10. I attempted writing my first romance novel at age 13 so this dream has been a long time coming. Though I put it aside for some time the desire never went away. Characters continued to scramble around in my brain begging to be released and have their story told. I finally gave in to some of them. One of those is Megan from Someone To Trust which is set in the Great Smokey Mountains. Megan has quick wit, a broken heart and a klutz problem. I love characters who are flawed and Megan is just such a character with a story that had to be told. I really like Megan and hope you will as well.

I don't have a release date yet, but when I do I'll be screaming it from the rooftops!

I HEART Libraries!

I’ve been fortunate to spend extended periods of warm(er) winter weather along the beautiful Gulf Coast of Alabama for the past two years as what some might call a snowbirder. So, when the time comes to promote my new releases, I can’t really call upon “my community” for a press release or “my friends” to promote my books in the local bookstores. But, some time last year, I read a blip on one of the many loops (I cannot remember which one) from a writer/librarian who suggested we “donate” a copy of our books to the local library and ask them to catalog it, which ensures that it goes into a large library database.

And with that, I traipsed down to the local library in Gulf Shores, Alabama, donated a copy of my book and asked them to catalog it. I asked if they offered anything like a book signing, and I was fortunate enough to arrive at the correct library, because the warm staff there accepted my books gladly, cataloged them, and scheduled me for their book discussion club February 6th at 6:30 pm and a book signing to follow. Another local library down the road has failed to respond to my queries, so I know how lucky I am. In fact, I’m so fortunate, that the book club coordinator ordered copies of my first two releases for their book club! 

With that success in mind, I trotted up the road to another library in the town of Foley, Alabama, and popped in for a visit with the library director who was extremely enthusiastic about setting up a book “talk” and signing. In fact, having joined the local Gulf Coast chapter of Romance Writers of America, I actually invited several other local authors to join me, and we’re going to have a four-author event there on February 11th at 6 pm.

Moral of the story: Use your libraries for promotion. Even if the one closest to you feels they’re too busy to accommodate you, the next one up the road might be pleased to provide a venue for your sales. And be sure and donate a book to them while you’re at it. It seems only fair! :-)

"Fantastic" Review for Caribbean Dreams of Love by Bess McBride

I'm tickled to see that my recent release, a light paranormal/fantasy called Caribbean Dreams of Love received a Fantastic Review from Amy at Writers and Readers of Distinctive Fiction. Here is what she has to say:

"This is such a heart warming book! It tells a story of a woman who gets another shot in love and romance. The story catches my interest from the start and keeps me going till the end. It's just hard to put down this book and I just could not stop reading.

Bess McBride writes a fantastic story in Caribbean Dreams of Love....This is a must read for dreamers and to those who never stop looking for true love. Thumbs up!"

http://blog.lyndacoker.net/2009/01/08/wrdf-review-of-caribbean-dreams-of-love-by-bess-mcbride-2.aspx

Blurb: Daisy and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Lily, are embarking on a Caribbean cruise. She isn't looking for anything special on the cruise other than a pleasant break from her humdrum existence as long-time divorced single mother to a busy teenage girl. She certainly isn't prepared for an enigmatic man named Peter whose idiosyncrasies in dress and speech mark him as an eccentric person to avoid. But Daisy can't avoid him. In fact, she begins to obsess about him from the first moment she catches him staring at her in the cruise ship terminal. Peter remains elusive and mysterious throughout the cruise. She catches sight of him occasionally, never often enough to please her, and they connect one wonderful night as he sweeps her into his arms for a waltz. A waltz? On a Caribbean cruise ship? While Daisy's dinner companions share nightly tales of the legends of cursed pirates, Daisy dreams of the mysterious man who has captured her heart.

Excerpt:

Bjorn glanced at his enrapt audience and took a deep breath. Daisy cringed. Something was coming.

"And with his last ounce of strength, Captain Smith grabbed his sword and plunged it in Gentleman Jones' heart."

A stab of pain seemed to knife through Daisy's own heart, and she involuntarily put a hand to the painful spot just below her left collarbone.

Even Becky was speechless, her jaw hung open. Lily took a breath and asked the question uppermost in Daisy's mind.

"Did he...does he...?"

"They say he still wanders the Caribbean, alone and lonely, a ghost with no hope of dying or returning to the living."

Bjorn's voice drifted away. He scanned the faces of his audience solemnly.

He shrugged. "But it's just a silly story, one of many. Who knows if any of them are true?"

And in a surprise move, he picked up his fork and resumed eating. Johana smiled demurely and took a sip of water before she too resumed eating.

Bjorn's stunned dinner companions stared at him. Lily, Daisy and Becky exchanged saddened glances.

Jim broke the silence when he started laughing and clapped Bjorn on the back. Bjorn choked slightly and put his napkin to his lips.

"Well, you sure had us going. I'll give you that. So...no truth to the story?"

Bjorn leaned slightly away from Jim and shrugged once again. "I find the Caribbean folklore fascinating, but many of the stories are just that. Stories. I heard this tale from a man in a museum in Nassau once. I liked it." He gave the group a sheepish smile.

"So, it's just a fairy tale?" Becky asked.

"Not a fairy tale," Bjorn smiled slightly. "Just an old legend. If the story were true, we would have to believe in ghosts...and I for one do not care to think about such things." He picked up his knife and fork again and began to cut his food, seemingly no longer interested.

"Just a legend," murmured Johana. She shook her head in amusement. "A story. Bjorn has many."

"Mom, what are you doing? Are you okay?"

Daisy turned to meet her daughter's eyes. Lily nodded toward Daisy's hand still dramatically clutched to her chest.

She colored and dropped her hand. The pain had eased.

Such a sad story!

Caribbean Dreams of Love

Yes, it's true....I'm just nipping in at the last minute with the video trailer for my upcoming release (Friday, December 12 at www.thewildrosepress.com), CARIBBEAN DREAMS OF LOVE, a light paranormal featuring a lonely woman on a Caribbean cruise with her precocious teenage daughter, a mysterious musician, a ghost, a pirate, and nightly dinner tales of legends and curses. Five Angels for A Train Through Time by Bess McBride

Five Angels from Fallen Angels Reviews!

Yahoooeee!!! Five Angels from Whitney at Fallen Angel Reviews for my recent release, A Train Through Time!

Here's a bit of the review.

Bess McBride’s A Train Through Time takes a very modern woman and drops her smack into the tail end of the Victorian era. Ellie is independent, vegetarian, and a feminist, and it is fascinating to watch her try to deal with the differences between the society she was raised in and that of 1901. Her struggle with wearing a corset is most entertaining and had this reader imagining the discomfort that such a device would cause. This story contains a lot of detail and appears to be well researched, and I certainly enjoyed the trip back in time to the Seattle of the Victorian era. The story also does a good job of teasing the reader with an element of suspense: Is this entire adventure a dream, or has Ellie really traveled in time? For Robert and Ellie’s sake, I hoped that the time travel was real, but there is just enough of a suggestion that it’s all a dream to raise a doubt. For this mix of historical detail, romance, and suspense, this reader found reading A Train Through Time a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

A Train Through Time by Bess McBride is Out in Print Today!

A Train Through Time, a time travel set on a train to the late Victorian era of Seattle, is out in print today! I love the book and had a great time writing it. I hope you enjoy! The book trailer link is below as well as blips from a few lovely reviews!

Blurb: College teacher Ellie Standish thinks she’s on a sleek modern train heading to a conference on women’s studies in Seattle, but she awakens from a night’s doze to find herself on a bizarre historical train full of late Victorian era reenactors who refuse to come out of character. When the leader of the group—one handsome, green-eyed Robert Chamberlain—finally convinces her the date is indeed 1901, a skeptical Ellie decries any eccentric theories of time travel and presumes she is smack dab in the middle of a very interesting historical dream. She turns the directorial reins of her dream over to one smitten and willing Robert, only to realize that dreams cannot last forever. Someday, she must wake up to reality, though Ellie no longer has any idea what reality is. She only knows that Robert must play an important part in her future. But how can he...if he’s only a figment of her imagination or worse yet...a man who belongs to an era long past?

Excerpt:

“I’m not going to marry an eighteen-year-old girl, Grandmother.” Robert turned away and strode to the bay window. He stared down onto the city below.

“Robert, be reasonable. You need to marry sometime. Don’t you want a wife? One young enough to give you children? Any one of your sister’s friends would be quite suitable.”

“I’m afraid not, Grandmother. I’m waiting.”

“Waiting for what?” Mrs. Chamberlain muttered.

“The right one. She will come along. I know it.”

“For goodness sake, Robert. Where will you find her? You never appear even to look.”

Robert continued to stare out the window with his hands clasped behind his back. “I do not think I have met her yet, but I feel certain that I will know her when she does finally appear.”

“Robert, what nonsense! You are usually so sensible in all matters except when it comes to this subject. It seems my son’s wife raised a silly romantic,” the older woman muttered.

“Perhaps she did, Grandmother. Perhaps she did,” he murmured with a smile.

“Give me great-grandchildren, Robert. I cannot live forever.”

He turned away and grinned at the frail appearing silver-haired woman resting on the green velvet settee.

“Yes, you will, Grandmother. You will outlive us all.”

“Hmmppff,” she muttered looking away. “The house is quiet. We need children in it once again.”

“Perhaps my sister can do the honors in a few years, Grandmother. All she lacks is a suitable husband.” He consulted his pocket watch.

She eyed him with a piercing stare.

“Have you become a confirmed bachelor, Robert? Has time passed you by then?”

Robert laughed and bent to kiss his grandmother’s pale cheek.

“I hope not, madam. I did not intend to remain a bachelor for the rest of my life.”

“Then why do you wait? Give me a practical reason, none of your romantic musings.”

He straightened and grinned. “I can only assure you once again that I wait for the right woman. I know it sounds foolish, but it is the truth.” He turned away toward the door. “I must go into the office to see to a few things before we leave tomorrow. I look forward to riding the train. I always do.”

A Book Signing and I Heart Libraries

L-R, Anna Kathryn Lanier, Bess McBride, Betty Hanawa and Linda Mooney at Boomerang Books, League City, Texas

I'm bursting to tell someone the good news! The local public library where I'm spending the winter on the Gulf Coast of Alabama requested 5 copies each of LOVE OF MY HEART and A SIGH OF LOVE to give to their book club as a Christmas present! (I'd say the name of the library, but I'd better wait until they give their gifts out at the beginning of December.) Isn't that the greatest news? Well, it is for me, anyway. They were going to order them from Baker and Taylor, who don't carry any in stock but have to order them from the printer, so they contacted me, and I just happened to have some available, don't you know! :-)

In addition, I'll be meeting with their book club in February and doing a book signing at that time. Wish me luck!

I just returned from my very first book signing at Boomerang Books in League City, Texas, an 8 hour drive one way. I know, I know. Craziness, eh? But I had a great time...especially chatting and visiting with my fellow authors, Betty Hanawa, Linda Mooney and Anna Kathryn Lanier. And a few other authors from my publisher showed up to cheer us on. I loved it! I'm hooked on book signings, I tell you! Hooked!

Literary hugs and kisses to all!

Love of My Heart by Bess McBride

Every now and then, something thrilling happens in the writing world. No, I didn't get THE CALL from one of the big NY houses. But I did get an impromptu, totally unsolicited, lovely, heartfelt comment from a fellow author about my first book, LOVE OF MY HEART, and I'd like to share it with you. Apparently, it was in answer to a loop question like "What was the last The Wild Rose Press book you read?"

And I quote:

"My last TWRP read was Love of My Heart by Bess McBride.

This is a wonderful Faery Rose blending old and new. Bess weaves a tale of a therapist who falls for a client and they soon find out they have a tangled past - not their past but someone else's.

This book haunts me and I find I'm thinking of it at the oddest times. When I finished reading it, sighed heavily not only that it was over but it that turned out so well.

Victoria Pitts-Caine
Alvarado Gold (White Rose)
In The Shadow of My Heart (American Rose)
http://vcaine.homestead.com"

How wonderful is that? "Haunts me." "Thinking of it at the oddest times." And I didn't have to pay her either! It helps that as a writer, she is wonderfully articulate in her comments. And what it told me was that someone really does like my writing...and if that someone does, others will as well. :-)

Thanks for letting me boast all! Ya just gotta have someone to share wonderful stories like these with. Here's a quick blurb and excerpt from LOVE OF MY HEART!

What happens when a mental health therapist falls in love with her client and dreams of a man in Victorian clothing?

Blurb: Aggie has done what no mental health therapist should do. She’s fallen in love with her mysterious client, Bill.

Aggie has recently purchased an old Victorian house on a hillside overlooking Commencement Bay in Tacoma, Washington; where she finds an old photograph of a Victorian era couple and a love letter written in 1885. The letter speaks of another love that can never be—that of Louise, the daughter of a wealthy English family, and her Irish lover, William. Heartbroken, Aggie soon begins to dream of the forbidden love between Louise and William, but in her dreams, William’s face mirrors that of her beloved, Bill.

Bill is in love with Aggie, and he can’t figure out how to get close to her. If only he hadn’t entered her professional doors as a client. How is he going to fix this?

Excerpt:
This was silly! It was just her foolish imagination running away with her common sense. The chances that she found a photograph and letter from an ancestor of her client, Bill, in her home were astronomical...remote...ridiculous.
She peered at the photograph again. Certainly, the warm broad smile was the same. They appeared to be of the same height and build—tall and slim. What hair was visible beneath the cap looked as dark as Bill’s. But she was sure the resemblance ended there.
She just had Bill on her mind, that’s all. She’d been thinking about him ever since their session today, and this was a perfect example of why she needed to end their counseling relationship. She was obviously obsessed and could think of nothing else besides him—even to the point of seeing his face in a photograph that looked like it might have been taken in the 1800s.
She turned the photograph over. The year 1885 was written on the back in pencil. She was disappointed to find no names. Were they William and Louise?
She began to read the letter. It was dated 20 November 1885. The handwriting was neat and clear, but some of the characters were difficult to decipher.

Dear Louise,
I am writing to you once again to beg you to reconsider. If you would but consent to see me, I know that I could convince you to shine your loving light on me once again. If I could hold your soft hands in mine, I could make you believe how much I love you and how much I miss you.
I have come daily to your home, but your mother and father have turned me away. They say that you do not want to see me. Is this true, my darling? I had hoped that it was your parents who prevented me from seeing you, because I knew that you and I would find a way to be together despite their objections. We have successfully done so in the past.
But, my dearest, if it is your choice not to see me, what can I say to change your mind? What can a man do when the love of his life turns from him and locks herself away in an inaccessible and forbidding tower? I do not know.
I have loved you for so long that I do not know how I shall continue. I cannot imagine a world without you by my side. My life stretches endlessly before me now—devoid of the warmth and joy of your love.
My beloved Louise, if this letter reaches you, please consent to see me. Give me a chance to prove my love. Put a single candle in your bedroom window at 7 o’clock in the evening for the next three nights, and I will come to you on the third night. I will know that you still love me, and I will knock on the door and demand to be allowed to see you.
I miss you terribly, darling, and I long to be with you once again.
With all my love, William”
As Aggie looked at the letter with a tear rolling down her face, she felt inexplicably exhausted. Her arms and legs were heavy, and it seemed too much effort even to sit up. She crawled up to her bed, dragging the cigar box, letter and photograph with her.
She lay down, feeling drained, and she studied the letter and photograph once again. What had gone wrong between the couple? Had Louise lived in this house? Was this her bedroom? Had she ever gotten the letter? Did her parents intercept it? How had it come to be hidden in the cupboard?
Aggie’s heart ached for the heartbroken man who wrote the letter. She knew it was probably because he shared the same name as her own dear Bill, but logic was playing very little part in her emotions tonight. Bill. She murmured the name again and again as her eyelids grew heavy and the brief moment between wakefulness and sleep passed quietly.

"Ms. McBride did a wonderful job of transporting me back and forth through time with Ellie. I loved the characters and the descriptions of the clothes, furniture and people from past times were superb. Ms. McBride made me feel as if I was in Ellie’s shoes feeling, smelling and seeing everything through her eyes. I fell in love with Ellie because she was smart and beautiful and she deserved someone who would love her unconditionally. I also fell in love with Robert Chamberlain because he was intelligent, charismatic and handsome. He had so much to offer Ellie and they were perfect for each other. If only they could get past some major hurdles in the process. I would definitely recommend this pleasant time travel story to other readers and this is a definite keeper in my library. Don’t pass this one up!"

A Trail of Love by Bess McBride is Released!!!

It's here! It's here. It's finally release day for my contemporary romance set in Glacier National Park, A Trail of Love. Will you look at that cover?

BACK COVER BLURB

Kerrie is on the run from a painful past, and she hides in plain sight as a summer employee in the majestic setting of Glacier National Park. Lonely and isolated from the family and friends she left behind, she dreams of the day when a kind and gentle man will say to her: “I fell in love with you the first time I saw you across the room.”

Dace Mitchell could be that man! The handsome bear ranger rescues Kerrie from her own foolish behavior--more than once--and she finds herself drawn to him against her will...until she discovers he’s already involved with someone else.

When Kerrie begins to get mysterious silent phone calls, it seems the past has caught up to her. Can Dace save her from a violent man who will stop at nothing to have her?

EXCERPT:

A moose! Baby mooses! Was that the right word? Kerrie had never seen moose before in real life. They were magnificent! The dark brown mother so tall, her long stick-like legs seemingly incapable of bearing her great weight. The dark blonde youngsters, though lighter in color and smaller in scale, were perfect mirror images of their mother.

She turned to face an approaching vehicle, casting a last glance over her shoulder to make sure the moose cow and her calves did not reenter the road.

A large silver truck pulled up to the kiosk and Kerrie wished she could have slid down to the floor of her booth. The driver was Dace and he wore the same Smokey Bear hat as she, except as one of those outdoorsy men, it looked so much better on him. He worked for the Park Service. Her summer had just gotten much, much longer.

Kerrie’s heart tapped an excited rhythm against her chest. If this was any indication of what the summer promised, her hiding place suddenly looked a lot like Paradise.

Dace cleaned off the battery posts and reattached the cables. He got back in the truck and turned the ignition over. The truck started right up. Kerrie was sure she actually heard it purring under his care.

Dace unfolded his long legs from the small truck and got out. “There you go,” he said with a grin as Kerrie kept her distance.

“Thank you, Dace. I really appreciate your help. I should get one of those gizmos so I don’t have to stand by my dead truck like a helpless female.”

His eyebrows shot up, and he tilted his head inquiringly. “I doubt you’re helpless. I’ve discovered you women are pretty handy when you need to be. Goodnight, Kerrie.”

Dace climbed in his truck and watched Kerrie pull out of the parking lot. Her taillights disappeared into the night. What was with that woman? For that matter, what was with him? He had better things to do than stalk an unwilling female. Didn’t he? A vision of his sterile, lonely apartment in government housing popped into view. Okay, so maybe he didn’t have anything better to do.

Still, there was something in those beautiful brown eyes of hers that compelled him. Loneliness was turning him into a hopeless romantic, for Pete’s sake. Every now and then, he caught her looking at him with an expression of... What was it? Longing? Dace bit his lower lip. If anything, Kerrie acted like she would be happy to see the last of him. For the most part.

He smiled at the last thought. There was something about her, and he wasn’t going to be satisfied until he knew what it was...or she gave him firm marching orders. With a sigh, he pondered the night ahead, hoping he would be able to get some sleep...though that seemed unlikely. Images of the silky dark curls of a complicated woman had been interrupting his sleep for the past few nights.

And here's a Five Heart/Recommended Read review from Diana Coyle at Night Owl Romance!

"Ms. McBride outdid herself with this story. I immediately felt drawn to Kerrie because of everything she had gone through over the years. I felt bad for her that she had such lack of self-esteem for herself. I also fell in love with Dace because he was the perfect knight in shining armor for Kerrie. He was everything that she had hoped to find in a man and so much more. Ms. McBride wrote this story from the heart and she even had me laughing at loud during some of the scenes. Pick up a copy of this story. I assure you that you won’t be disappointed. You did a fantastic job, Bess!"

A Sigh of Love by Bess McBride Goes to Print!

It's true! It's true! My Alaskan romance, A Sigh of Love will be available in print this Friday, August 8, 2008, at most online bookstores (although I saw it ready to go at www.amazon.com today). :-)

Aaaannnnddd...I got my author copies today! All twenty one of them...to start! I'm absolutely thrilled to hold the book in my hands at long last! Not quite sure what I'm going to do with them. I'll use some for contest prizes, maybe schedule a book signing or two! Who knows!

Here's the blurb:
Abbie is on her way to Anchorage, Alaska to meet George whom she has been corresponding by telephone for the past three months. George has repeatedly asked her to come up to Alaska for a visit so they can meet in person. Call her crazy, but Abbie makes airline reservations to fly from her home in Seattle up to Anchorage to meet George. She’s lonely. Why shouldn’t she make a mad romantic dash up to the last frontier to meet a man? She’ll just ignore the practicality and logistics of a long-distance relationship. When she calls George to let him know her arrival time, he chooses that awful moment to let Abbie know that he thinks they don’t have much in common after all and she should cancel her plane reservations. Abbie is stunned, humiliated and ashamed of the lonely desperation that drove her to make nonrefundable airline reservations to Alaska.

What to do? Abbie decides to go to Alaska anyway. A grouchy and depressed Abbie meets Tom on the plane, a tall, handsome anthropology professor who happens to be half Native Alaskan and half Caucasian. As the plane flies north, Tom and Abbie discover a mutual attraction. By flight’s end, Abbie is completely enamored of the stranger, and she doubts her judgment, perhaps even her sanity, as she finds herself falling again for yet another Alaskan male...until George shows up, that is.

I've been fortunate to have some very nice reviews of A Sigh of Love. Please stop by my website at www.bessmcbride.com and read a few.
